CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Every aspect of management in the modern age relies heavily on information to survive nothing moves without information and it is generally believed that information is power it is important resource needed.
To develop other resources changing circumstance and environment have necessitated the need various levels of management.
The development and use of management information system is a modern phenomenon concerned with the use of appropriate information that will lead to better planning, better decision making, and effective directing function that will lead to attainment of desirable objectives.
Management information system remains the system that aim at providing management with needed information on a regular basis.
This call to mind the time value of information which implies hat when the required information which implies that when the required information is received behind the period it will be used, the information becomes useless management information system tries to inform the management how to provide these information effective decision making also come to bear on the effective and adaptive application of management information system for organization success.
Management information system is generally thought of as an integrated user machine system providing information to support operations, management and decision making functions in an organization it is a special purpose system useful for management in organization management information system accessible and rapid convey or belt for appropriate high quality information from its generation to its users the heart of an effective management information system there is a carefully considered, designed and excursed database it correspond to adaptive decisions.
PROFILE OF UNILEVER ABA, ABIA STATE
Unilever Nigeria Plc is engaged in the manufacture and marketing of foods and food ingredients, and home and personal care products. The Company’s segments are Food Products, Home Care and Personal Care products. Its Foods Products segment includes sales of tea, savory and spreads. The Company’s Home Care segment includes sales of fabric care, household cleaning and water purification products. Its Personal Care segment includes sales of skin care and oral care products. Its international brands include Close-Up toothpaste, Pepsodent toothpaste, LUX beauty soap, Lifebuoy soap, Rexona, Vaseline lotion and Vaseline Petroleum Jelly in the Personal Care Unit of the business; Blue Band Margarine, Lipton Yellow Label Tea and Knorr bouillon cubes in the Foods Unit, and OMO Multi-Active Detergent ,Sunlight washing powder and Sunlight Dish washing liquid in the Home Care Unit. The Company has manufacturing sites in Oregun, Lagos State and Agbara, Ogun State.
Unilever Nigeria Plc, was incorporated as Lever Brothers (West Africa) Ltd on 11th April, 1923 by Lord Leverhulme, but t he company’s antecedents have to be traced back to his existing trading interests in Nigeria and West Africa generally, and to the fact that he had since the 19th century been greatly involved with the soap business in Britain. Unilever Nigeria Plc started as a soap manufacturing company, and is today one of the oldest surviving manufacturing organizations in Nigeria.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Information is a key to effective direction and decision making. Though some organization claim to use management information system but it has been observed that inefficient decision been observed and ineffective directing function has persisted this has affected organization perform an adversely.
This can be traced to;
– Management information system that does not give quality information timely.
– Lack of qualified personnel to operate and use the system.
– The high cost of setting up management information system.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of management information system on organization performance. The specific objectives include;
- To determine the relationship between management information system and quality timely information.
- To find out the relationship between management information and quality personnel.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following research questions guided this study.
1) How does management information system affect decision making in organization?
2) What is the relationship between management information system and quality timely information?
3) What is the relationship between management information system and cost?
1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
HOI: Management information system does not have significant relationship with decision making in organization.
HO2: Management information system does not have significant relationship with quality of personnel.
HA2: Management information system significant relationship with quality of personnel.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Those that will benefit from this study includes
THE MANAGEMENT: Management will benefit in the sense that it will help them to know that without relevant and good information made available by an effective management information system base the organization will be headily for rocks.
EMPLOYEES: Employees will benefit because M.I.S that is effective and efficient provides them with information before we hand and that will help them to minimize errors in their activities.
THE SOCIETY AT LARGE: The society will benefit in the sense that they can have easy asses to the basic information that they required with less minimal stress.
THE RESEARCHER AND FUTURE RESEARCHERS
Through this study the researcher has been able to know the role management information system plays in an organization and the research work will serve as a secondary data for future researchers.
THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study on the impact of management information system on organization focused on Unilever Aba, Abia state.
1.8 THE LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The major limitations of this study are the uncooperative attitude of the respondents who taught that the information sought was for personal and political reasons . Absence of adequate materials in the factory was also a major constraints faced. The researcher also faced financial/constraints as one of the limitations. Time also affected the assumption made because the researcher was rusting to beat the time stipulated for this work.
1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
Computerized information processing system designed to support the activities of company or management.
DATA: These are group of non-random symbols such as world, figures values which represent events and things that have taken place.
INFORAMTION: Data that have been interested and understood by the recipient of the message.
SYSTEM: Group of things or parts working together as a whole.
ORGANIZATION: A combination of people working together in pursuit of certain common purpose known as organization goal.
EFFECTIVENESS: Achieving the desired result
MANAGEMENT: The act of getting things done in an organization through and with people.
