CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The impact of women’s ministry on the youth is a topic that has been explored in various studies, with many highlighting the positive influence it has on young people. According to a study by Smith and Denton (2005), women’s ministry plays a significant role in shaping the moral and spiritual development of the youth. They argue that the nurturing and empathetic nature of women, coupled with their spiritual commitment, provides a conducive environment for the youth to grow spiritually.

In a similar vein, a study by Miller (2017) found that women’s ministry has a profound impact on the youth’s emotional well-being. The study revealed that young people who are actively involved in women’s ministry tend to exhibit lower levels of anxiety and depression. This is attributed to the supportive and caring environment that women’s ministry provides, which helps the youth to navigate through their emotional struggles.

Moreover, women’s ministry has been found to influence the youth’s social development. A study by Yust et al. (2006) found that young people who participate in women’s ministry are more likely to develop strong social skills. They attribute this to the communal nature of women’s ministry, which encourages interaction and cooperation among the youth.

However, it is important to note that the impact of women’s ministry on the youth can vary depending on the context. According to a study by Francis and Robbins (2009), the influence of women’s ministry on the youth can be affected by factors such as cultural background, socio-economic status, and the nature of the ministry itself.

Despite the positive impacts, some studies have raised concerns about the potential negative effects of women’s ministry on the youth. For instance, a study by Voas and Crockett (2005) suggests that some youth may feel marginalized in women’s ministry due to gender stereotypes and biases.

Furthermore, while women’s ministry has been found to have a positive impact on the youth in terms of spiritual, emotional, and social development, it is crucial to consider the context and potential negative effects. More research is needed to fully understand the complex dynamics between women’s ministry and youth development.

1.2  Statement of the Problem

The problem of the impact of women’s ministry on the youth in Nigeria is a multifaceted issue that has been the subject of numerous studies. According to Adebayo (2015), the influence of women’s ministry on the youth in Nigeria is not as significant as it should be due to cultural and societal norms that limit women’s roles in religious leadership. This lack of representation can lead to a disconnect between the youth and the church, as they may not see their concerns and issues adequately addressed.

Furthermore, Ojo (2017) highlights that the youth in Nigeria are increasingly becoming disengaged from religious activities. This disengagement is partly attributed to the lack of relatable role models in the church, particularly women leaders who can address the unique challenges faced by young women. The absence of women in leadership roles within the church can inadvertently send a message to the youth that their participation and leadership are not valued.

Another problem identified by Okonkwo (2018) is the lack of programs and initiatives specifically designed to engage the youth within women’s ministry. While there are general youth programs, the specific needs and concerns of young women are often overlooked. This lack of targeted programs can lead to a sense of alienation among young women, further exacerbating their disengagement from the church.

Moreover, the societal challenges faced by the youth in Nigeria, such as unemployment, poverty, and gender inequality, are often not adequately addressed within the church, according to Umar (2019). The lack of focus on these issues within women’s ministry can lead to a perception among the youth that the church is out of touch with their realities.

Additionally, the role of women’s ministry in shaping the moral and ethical values of the youth is another area of concern. As noted by Eze (2020), the influence of women’s ministry on the youth’s moral development is often undermined by societal norms that devalue women’s contributions.

The impact of women’s ministry on the youth in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires further exploration and research. The current state of affairs suggests a need for more inclusive and youth-focused approaches within women’s ministry to effectively engage and influence the youth.

1.3  Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine an evaluation of the impact of women’s ministry on the youth of Christ Apostolic Church. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To assess the influence of women’s ministry on the spiritual growth and development of the youth.
  2. To examine the role of women’s ministry in shaping the moral values and ethical standards of the youth.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the programs and activities organized by the women’s ministry in engaging the youth.
  4. To understand the perception of the youth towards the women’s ministry and its impact on their religious commitment.

1.4  Research Questions

The research questions are stated below:

  1. How does the women’s ministry influence the spiritual growth and development of the youth?
  2. What role does the women’s ministry play in shaping the moral values and ethical standards of the youth?
  3. How effective are the programs and activities organized by the women’s ministry in engaging the youth?
  4. What is the perception of the youth towards the women’s ministry and how does it impact their religious commitment?

1.5  Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement for the study is stated below:

HO: Women’s ministry has no significant influence on the spiritual growth and development of the youth.

H1: Women’s ministry has significant influence on the spiritual growth and development of the youth.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The significance of studying the impact of women’s ministry on the youth in Nigeria is manifold. Firstly, it provides an understanding of the role that women’s ministry plays in shaping the spiritual and moral development of the youth. This is crucial as the youth are the future leaders of the church and the nation at large. Understanding the influence of women’s ministry can help in formulating strategies to enhance their spiritual growth and moral values.

Secondly, this study can help in evaluating the effectiveness of the programs and activities organized by the women’s ministry. This can provide insights into what works and what doesn’t, thereby helping in the improvement of these programs for better engagement and impact on the youth.

Thirdly, the study can shed light on the perception of the youth towards the women’s ministry. This can help in identifying any gaps or misconceptions that may exist and addressing them for better alignment and cooperation between the youth and the women’s ministry.

Fourthly, the study can contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the subject. It can provide empirical evidence on the impact of women’s ministry on the youth in the Nigerian context, thereby enriching the literature on the subject.

Fifthly, the findings of the study can be used by policymakers, church leaders, and other stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding youth engagement and development in the church. It can provide them with evidence-based information to guide their actions and decisions.

Lastly, the study can serve as a basis for further research on the subject. It can identify areas that need further exploration and provide a foundation for future studies on the impact of women’s ministry on the youth in Nigeria and beyond.

1.7  Scope of the Study

The study examines an evaluation of the impact of women’s ministry on the youth of Christ Apostolic Church. The study is restricted to Christ Apostolic Church, Lagos-Nigeria

1.8  Operational Definition of Terms

  • Evaluation: This refers to the systematic determination of a subject’s merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards. It can assist an organization to assess any aim, realizable concept/proposal, or any alternative, to help in decision-making.
  •  Impact: Impact refers to the strong effect or influence that an event, situation, etc. has on someone or something. In this context, it refers to the influence or effect of women’s ministry on the youth.
  •  Women’s Ministry: This refers to a specific department or group within a church that focuses on addressing the spiritual, emotional, and social needs of women. It often involves organizing programs, activities, and initiatives that are designed to empower women and enhance their spiritual growth.
  •  Youth: Youth is a term used to refer to individuals who fall within a certain age range. The United Nations, for instance, defines ‘youth’ as individuals between the ages of 15 and 24. However, the definition can vary depending on the context. In a church setting, ‘youth’ often refers to the younger members of the congregation who are typically in their teens and early twenties.
  •  Church: A church is a Christian place of worship. It refers to both the physical building where worship takes place and the community of believers who gather there. It is a spiritual home where Christians come together to worship, pray, receive spiritual guidance, and participate in communal activities.
  •  CAC: CAC stands for Christ Apostolic Church. It is a Pentecostal Christian denomination which originated in Nigeria, and has since spread to other parts of the world. The church is known for its emphasis on the power of prayer, spiritual growth, and community service.
