ABSTRACT

The modernist movement, which began in the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, sparked a rebellion against traditional ways of life by people who felt traditional architecture, literature, religious faith, social organization and daily life had become outdated in the new economic, social and political philosophies of an emerging new world coming on the heels of the industrial revolution. The intellectual foundation of modernism came to light during the Renaissance period when, through the study of the art, poetry, philosophy, and science of ancient Greece and Rome, humanists revived the notion that man, rather than God, is the measure of all things. The enlightenment period did more than giving rise to ‘utopian’ visions of a more perfect society; it also fuelled the fire in which Contemporary Christianity was forged. More often than not, these new-found truths of the Enlightenment flew in the face of conventional beliefs, especially those held by the Church. For example, contrary to what the Church had maintained for centuries, such doctrines as the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, authority of the scriptures and its infallibility have now become questionable to the modern mind. The modernists deny belief in the supernatural for answers and understanding about life. Therefore, it has become entrenched into the belief and culture systems of the western world that faith and scripture alone are the final answers to the questions plaguing the contemporary mind. While the average Christian Church in the Nigerian society is not sunk in the mire of modernism as its American counterpart, we are not totally liberated as recent happenings in the larger Nigerian society have revealed. There has been a sudden clamour for gay marriages, feminism is gradually gaining ground, Church authorities are now more boldly questioned, doctrines are now being seen as obsolete and a host of other religious vices. With these recent developments, one can only think that it is a matter of time before it gets worse. This research is aimed at evaluating the present day ideology of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and to draw attention to the spread of modernist ideas in the Redeemed Christian Church of God if there are any. Being the fastest growing Pentecostal Church in the world and an upward trendsetter in the Nigerian society having spread its tentacles to over 110 nations of the world, it is a likely destination for foreign ideas detrimental to the Christian faith and even within its own congregation, it is in an equally dangerous position.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1       INTRODUCTION

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” 2 Tim 3:16. If the aforementioned is anything to go by, then all scripture is given by God and since God is not liable to errors and cannot fail, we then should say that the words that came by His breath are true in every sense and cannot fail to perform intended purposes.

Authority could be applied in these ways; the power or right to enforce obedience, moral or legal supremacy, right to command or give a final decision. Bernard Ramm suggests, “Authority itself means that right or power to command action or compliance, or to determine belief or custom, expecting obedience from those under authority, and in turn giving responsible account for the claim to right or power.”[1]
