CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Prayer ministry is a fundamental aspect of church growth, particularly in Nigeria, where religion plays a significant role in society. According to Agha (2017), prayer is a spiritual exercise that connects believers to God, and it is through this connection that church growth can be achieved. The author further posits that a church with a strong prayer ministry tends to experience more growth because it fosters a sense of community among members, thereby attracting more people. This assertion is supported by Ojo (2015), who found a positive correlation between effective prayer ministry and church growth in Nigeria.

The role of prayer in church growth cannot be overemphasized. As noted by Okorie (2019), prayer is a spiritual tool that can be used to overcome challenges and obstacles that may hinder church growth. The author argues that churches that prioritize prayer often experience divine intervention, which can lead to growth. Similarly, Eze (2016) asserts that prayer is a catalyst for spiritual revival, which is a prerequisite for church growth. The author’s study on Pentecostal churches in Nigeria revealed that churches that experienced significant growth had vibrant prayer ministries.

However, building an effective prayer ministry requires strategic planning and implementation. According to Uche (2018), churches need to create a conducive environment for prayer, provide prayer resources, and train members on effective prayer strategies. The author further suggests that churches should organize regular prayer meetings and encourage members to participate actively. This view is echoed by Nwankwo (2020), who emphasizes the need for continuous prayer education and training to enhance the effectiveness of prayer ministries.

Despite the importance of prayer in church growth, some challenges may hinder the effectiveness of prayer ministries. As noted by Ihejirika (2017), these challenges include lack of commitment among members, inadequate prayer resources, and lack of proper training. The author suggests that churches should address these challenges to enhance the effectiveness of their prayer ministries. Similarly, Onyekuru (2019) argues that churches need to invest in prayer ministries to overcome these challenges and promote church growth.

Furthermore, building an effective prayer ministry is a prerequisite for church growth in Nigeria. The literature reviewed suggests that churches that prioritize prayer tend to experience more growth. However, churches need to address the challenges that may hinder the effectiveness of their prayer ministries. More research is needed to explore the strategies that churches can use to enhance the effectiveness of their prayer ministries.

  • Statement of the Problem

The problem of stagnation in church growth in Nigeria is a pressing issue that has been observed over the years. Despite the high level of religiosity in the country, many churches are not experiencing the expected growth in membership (Adeyemo, 2010). This stagnation has been attributed to various factors, including lack of effective praying ministry.

The praying ministry is a critical component of church growth. However, many churches in Nigeria have not fully harnessed the potential of this ministry (Ojo, 2015). The lack of emphasis on prayer and the spiritual development of members has resulted in a lack of spiritual growth, which in turn affects the numerical growth of the church.

Furthermore, the lack of training and development for those in the praying ministry is another problem. Many churches do not invest in the training of their prayer warriors, resulting in a lack of effectiveness in their prayer sessions (Adegbola, 2017). This lack of training and development is a significant hindrance to the growth of the church.

Another issue is the lack of strategic planning in the praying ministry. Many churches do not have a strategic plan for their praying ministry, resulting in a lack of direction and focus (Ukah, 2008). This lack of strategic planning affects the effectiveness of the praying ministry and, by extension, the growth of the church.

The problem is further compounded by the lack of resources dedicated to the praying ministry. Many churches do not allocate sufficient resources to the praying ministry, resulting in a lack of materials and facilities for effective prayer sessions (Ayegboyin, 2012). This lack of resources is a significant barrier to the effectiveness of the praying ministry and the growth of the church.

In conclusion, the problem of stagnation in church growth in Nigeria can be attributed to the lack of effective praying ministry. This problem is manifested in the lack of emphasis on prayer, lack of training and development for prayer warriors, lack of strategic planning, and lack of resources dedicated to the praying ministry. Therefore, building on effective praying ministry is a prerequisite to church growth in Nigeria.

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The study examines building on effective Praying Ministry: A Prerequisite to Church Growth. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To examine the role of prayer in the growth and development of the church in Nigeria.
  2. To investigate the relationship between effective prayer ministry and church growth in MFM.
  3. To identify the challenges hindering effective prayer ministry in Nigerian churches.
  4. To propose strategies for building an effective prayer ministry that can facilitate church growth.
  5. To evaluate the impact of an effective prayer ministry on the overall spiritual health and community engagement of the church.
  • Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

  1. What role does prayer play in the growth and development of the church in Nigeria?
  2. Is there a relationship between effective prayer ministry and church growth in MFM?
  3. What are the challenges hindering effective prayer ministry in Nigerian churches?
  4. What strategies can be proposed for building an effective prayer ministry that can facilitate church growth?
  5. How does an effective prayer ministry impact the overall spiritual health and community engagement of the church?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement for the study is stated below:

HO: Effective prayer ministry has no significant impact on church growth in MFM

H1: Effective prayer ministry has significant impact on church growth in MFM

  • Significance of the Study

The significance of this study lies in its potential to shed light on the role of prayer in church growth in Nigeria. The church, as a spiritual institution, relies heavily on prayer as a means of communication with the divine. Understanding the impact of prayer on church growth could provide valuable insights for church leaders and members alike. This study could also serve as a guide for developing effective prayer ministries that can facilitate church growth.

Secondly, this study could contribute to the body of knowledge on religious practices and church growth in Nigeria. Despite the prevalence of Christianity in Nigeria, there is a dearth of scholarly research on the role of prayer in church growth. This study could fill this gap and provide a foundation for future research in this area.

Thirdly, the findings of this study could have practical implications for church leaders and members. If prayer is found to be a significant factor in church growth, church leaders could prioritize prayer ministries and encourage members to participate more actively in prayer activities. This could lead to increased church growth and a stronger sense of community among church members.

Fourthly, this study could also have societal implications. Churches play a significant role in Nigerian society, providing spiritual guidance, social support, and community engagement. By enhancing church growth, this study could indirectly contribute to societal development and cohesion.

Fifthly, this study could also provide insights into the challenges hindering effective prayer ministry in Nigerian churches. By identifying these challenges, the study could propose strategies for overcoming them and building more effective prayer ministries.

Lastly, this study could evaluate the impact of an effective prayer ministry on the overall spiritual health and community engagement of the church. This could provide a more holistic understanding of the role of prayer in the church, beyond just church growth.

 1.7. Scope of the Study

The study examines “Building on Effective Praying Ministry: A Prerequisite to Church Growth”. A Case Study of MFM International Headquarters Onike Yaba Lagos. The study is restricted to MFM International Headquarters Onike Yaba Lagos.

1.8.  Operational Definition of Terms

“Building”: In this context, “building” refers to the process of developing, strengthening, or establishing something. It’s about creating a strong foundation and continually adding to it to make it stronger and more effective.

“Church Growth”: Church growth refers to the increase in the number of attendees or members in a church. This can be measured in various ways, including the number of new members, the number of people attending services, or the level of engagement of the congregation.

“Church”: A church is a Christian place of worship. It is a community of believers who come together to worship God, learn about the Bible, and support each other in their faith journey.

“MFM”: MFM stands for Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, a Pentecostal Christian denomination in Nigeria known for its emphasis on prayer and deliverance ministry.
