CAUSES OF THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF COOPERATIVE ENTERPRISES
(CASE STUDY OF ISIALA NGWA NORTH L.G.A, ABIA STATE)
CHAPTER ONE
- INTRODUCTION
The existence of co-operative society is not like the existence other society or parties. This is because cooperative business enterprise performs different functions according to the co-operative business enterprise performing different function according to the co-operative law’s article of association and their memorandum. This aspect stipulates the articles the extent to which organization or business entity can operate.
Barko (1987) said that co-operative business enterprise is the provider of the cooperative effect in cooperative societies, individuals especially in developing countries join cooperative not necessarily due to ideological indication but basically to enhance the economic well-being of one self
Okoreaffia (2007) said that cooperative enterprise is a jointly owned long term/permanent business enterprise as an instrument for producing goods and services for members’ welfare. The main aim of cooperative enterprise is to meet the needs of members at the least possible cost. The very idea of co-operative suggests that members work together voluntary. Nobody is forced to join or leave the organization. Members of the cooperative enterprise share their risk, duties, responsibilities, rights and benefits etc. together by collective efforts.
Okechukwu (2003) said that understanding of cooperative law and regulation, the origin of cooperative societies in ABIA STATE can be viewed under the origin of cooperative federation. This organization was registered as an organization in 1980 under the cooperative society’s law of land rules of eastern Nigerian (cap 28) revised law, this organization was incorporated as an 529, also liability company of Feb. 26th 1993.
- BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The ABIA co-operative federation is the mother union of all co-operative in the state, whether primary, secondary or tertiary. As a result of the transfer of the power, the promotion has continued to be deliberately encouraged as an internal part of government development programmes partly a means of raising the standard of living of the musses through a democratically organized and managed enterprise.
Production is a process by which raw materials are transformed into a different product, be it finished goods (obi 2004) economics of cooperative production may be seen as transformation of raw materials into finished goods and distribution of provision of goods and services in other to satisfy human wants. Cooperative enterprise has so many things that can cause poor performance towards increase in production cooperative enterprise in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government of ABIA STATE was incorporated request established with the aim of increasing the standard of living of people in the community.
Cooperative enterprise makes important economic contributions to the national economy and for material survival of all the people. Due to the nature of cooperative business enterprise as non-profit business organization, it goes to buttress cooperative as organization that do not minimize profit (osy 2006). There are many problems that cause poor performance towards increase production in Isiala Ngwa north of Local Government of ABIA STATE such as corruption. A recent British government publication in elicits Nigeria on the issue of corruption. Cooperative exists with the society and being officials and officers are corrupt.
High level of illiteracy and rural setting, many cooperative are located in the rural area where job seekers do not want to go. Lack of serious training programme, it is widely believed that the long years of military holocaust in Nigeria had crippled every aspect of our system. The officer of cooperative are ill trained.
- STATEMENT OF THE STUDY
Due to the down turn in the economic situation and the liabilities to the organization unite themselves, cooperative organization or enterprises it has become unemployed and has not improved their structural hence the low contributions has not been better to the useful of themselves and the society at large, the individuals cooperative members need to be self employed.
It is possible, to some extent, to substitute one factor of production for another. This means for instance, if there’s increase in the factor of production or use more labour it will increase in productivity. Individuals can only meet up with the force of stabilization cooperative enterprise
- OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The main objectives of the study are as follows
- To determine the causes of poor performance of cooperative enterprise in ISIALA-NGWA NORTH L.G.A ABIA STATE.
- To identify the problems of cooperative enterprise in ISIALA-NGWA NORTH L.G.A ABIA STATE.
- To find solutions to the problem of the cooperative enterprise
- To adopt a good strategy that will help in reduction of the poor performance of the cooperative enterprise.
- To improve the performance of cooperative enterprise in ISIALA-NGWA NORTH L.G.A ABIA STATE.
- Also to educate the society on the importance of cooperative enterprise

- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
During the research work, the researcher believes that this research work will be of great importance and encouragement to the cooperative enterprise.
Also this work will enable the government to implement strategies in order to reduce causes of poor performance of cooperative enterprise, hence to improve the welfare of the society, when the causes of poor performance, there will be a positive reverse, hence implifying the image of the organization.
- SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The researcher project cause of poor performance of cooperative enterprise towards increase in production is focused on a case study of Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government of Abia State.
In an attempt to produce this work the researcher faces several handicaps, which includes inadequate of data, non-cooperative attitude of some officials visited resulting in their failure to give some vital information about their enterprise.
Finally due to insufficient fund, moving to the specially sampled cooperative enterprise and other research center couldn’t be possible due to transport fares and other financial problems
- LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
In an attempt to produce this work the researcher faces several handicaps, which includes inadequate of data, non-cooperative attitude of some officials visited resulting in their failure to give some vital information about their society.
And how society carryout operations, it was not easily however to contact some officials of the local government council cooperative division whose experience would have helped the researcher in developing broad approach.
Finally due to insufficient fund, moving to the specially sampled cooperative enterprise and other research center couldn’t be possible due to transport fares and other financial problems
- DEFINITION OF TERMS
CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY: according to the international labour organization (ILO) co-operative society is an association of persons who have voluntarily joined together to achieve a common end through the formation of a democratically controlled business organization, making equitable contributions to the capital required and accepting a fair share of the risk and benefits of the undertaking in which members actively participate.
CO-OPERATIVE ENTERPRISE: A cooperative enterprise is an association of persons with identical interest, having socio-economic problems who voluntarily come together, pooling their resources into a joint enterprise which is democratically managed, sharing the result equitably.
PRODUCTION: According to economic of cooperative (2008) production may be seen as transformation of raw materials into finished goods and distribution of provision of goods and services in other to satisfy human wants.
COOPERATIVE BUSINESS ENTERPRISE: A jointly owned long term/permanent business enterprise is an instrument for producing goods and services for the member welfare
