CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

       The sensitive nature of workers has made employers to face the problem of choice of gender of workers to employ in their organizations. This is because the word “workers” has undergone several reproaches, misconceptions and misinterpretations by as many individuals employers and even the workers themselves some understood it to mean a female who took down notes and correspondence for and executives and managers in shorthand and transcribe it back with computer.

Herper Collins (2009) defined workers as a person who acts and gets things done. They are principal action in their affairs. Dictionary defined it as a person who employed to do physical work rather than organizing things or managing people.

According to Ohakwe, Idih, Chukwumezie (2000) for workers to be effective, they must posses certain personal skills and attributed, which the business environment requires for effectiveness and worth whiteness. The workers must be tactful, discrete and diplomatic in relating to visitors and callers; they must show a high degree of responsibility, imagination and initiative, they must have self-control, good health pleasant speaking voice being methodical and having good educational background/qualification.

Although, almost every organizational vacancy advertisement in both local national newspaper indicates preference as to which gender should apply despite the all tertiary institutions gives equal educational opportunities to all students, irrespective of sex or status.

Employers instead of emphasizing on candidates professional training and skills seem to be emphasizing on gender.

In employing male or female workers, their personal attributes and business qualities are not left out. The workers are expected to be loyal, discreet and tactful, and maintain complete confidentiality. They are expected to devote all energies and enthusiasm to the employer’s interests. It is their duty to protect the executive from unwanted and undesirable demands and interruptions. They also act as custodian to the equipment of machines under their control. Foresight, managerial skills, experience versatility and professionalism are some exceptional qualities also expected from them.

As a result of the importance attached to this point, it has promoted most organizations to be careful about the choice of sex they make or about the description tag the give to the person’s the want as their workers. In the resent times there has been controversy over which sex is preferable in the choice of a workers. This goes to emphasize whether the male workers are employed preference is giving to their marital status.

Male and female are equal learning ability, memory, reasoning ability, creating and intelligence, but some employers still believe that there is creativity, reasoning and learning ability differences between the sexes.

No wonder, Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly (1994) opined that when society emphasized the difference between the sexes and treated them differently, there were some differences in such area aggressiveness and social behaivour. But as society places more emphasis on equal opportunity and treatment, many differences are likely to disappear. Male and females are becoming more alike in terms of workplace behaviour hence making the secretarial profession open to both genders.

 

Statement of the Problem

The probe of this study is to ascertain the reasons behind employer’s preference of one gender of workers to another.

This day’s advertisements are made requiring the services of workers. Most of the employers show their preference by stressing on the gender. Some psychologist detects some selective factors that explain the superiority of male workers over their female counterparts and vice versa.

Naturally, women in different employ, have additional roles as wives and mother in the offices, they work extra hard to prove their mettle as they often face hostility of men who see them as intruders. Some employers prefer male workers than female workers.

 

Purpose of the Study

       The major purpose of the study was to evaluate gender preference in the employment of workers specifically, the study attempt to:

  1. Identify the major criteria put into consideration by employers to choosing to work with female workers.
  2. Identify the major criteria put into consideration by employer to choosing to work with male workers.
  3. Find out why female workers are more in the secretarial profession.
  4. Find out the extent to which married female workers perform lower than their male counterparts.

 

Research Questions

  1. What are the major criteria considered by employers before choosing to work with female workers?
  2. What are major criteria considered by employers before choosing to work with male workers?
  3. Why females are prevent in secretarial profession?
  4. To what extend do female workers perform lower than their male counterpart?

 

Significant of the Study

This study is expected to provide a guideline for employers who prefer one gender of workers to the other based on their efficiency qualities and attributes. It will significantly bring to the fore of its readers a scientific evidence of formerly unsubstantiated facts on related issues concerning the relationship among workers (of both gender) and their managers. It will help the researcher to know how workers employed in the past and use it to compare their future findings in order to make adequate recommendations.

The student, workers, manager and researchers who may want to carry out further research in the area of study will use it as a reference material.

 

Scope of the Study

       The study was restricted to gender preference in the employment of workers. The researcher is expected to cover some selected banks in Owerri Urban Imo State.

 

Limitation of the Study

       The researcher encountered a few constrains in the process of caring out this research. However, of mention here is the financial involvement and time constraints and because of these, the study has been reduced considerably.

 

Definition of Terms

This fact will help the researcher to clearly present the clear definition of the relevant concepts in the way if study that findings, inter-proportions and conclusion that comes from the study would be clearly understood in their correct context

 

The concepts

Gender: this refers to an individual’s psychological type, it is acquired through experience.

Gender preference: It is a kind of treatment which is given to a person or group of people because they are categorized as male or female.

Gender Role: This refer to the attitude and behavior that class a person in stereotypical identify.

Sex: This is a state of being either male or female
