CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

  •      INTRODUCTION

E-Commerce refers to any form of business transaction conducted online. The most popular example of e-commerce is online shopping, which is defined as buying and selling of goods and services through the internet on any device. However, e-commerce can also entail other types of activities, such as online auctions, payment gateways, online ticketing, and internet banking. It draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. This includes business-to-business activities and outreaches such as using email for unsolicited ads (usually viewed as spam) to consumers and other potential business prospects, as well as to send out e-newsletters to subscribers. More companies now try to entice consumers directly online, using tools such as digital coupons, social media marketing and targeted advertisements (Cole, 2016).

Electronic commerce, or E-commerce, which literally means business trading through the Internet, has been around the globe since mid-90s. However, until the recent few years, E-commerce is getting more and more attention from entrepreneur and consumers, both local and international. One of the main reasons is due to the highly successful operations of some well-known names on the internet, such as eBay, Flipkart, Infibeam, Yebhi, Yahoo, Homeshop18, Amazon, Univercell, Smartshoppers, Timtara, Bigadda, Dell, Bitfang, Pristinenote, Adexmart, Zoomin, Cromaretail, Letsshop etc. The sales revenue these companies have shown in their annual reports are without doubt, one of the biggest factors why E-commerce is important in the commercial market nowadays (ViNSiGN, 2005).

E-commerce proved its importance based on the fact where time is essence. In the commercial markets, time plays an important role to both the business and consumers. From the business perspective, with less time spent during each transaction, more transaction can be achieved on the same day. As for the consumer, they will save up more time during their transaction. Because of this, E-commerce steps in and replaced the traditional commerce method where a single transaction can cost both parties a lot of valuable time. With just a few clicks in minutes, a transaction or an order can be placed and completed via the internet with ease. For instance, a banking transaction can be completed through the internet within a few minutes compared to the traditional banking method which may take up to hours and also may cause a whole lot of inconvenience. This fact obviously proves that E-commerce is beneficial to both business owner, the business itself and the consumer as payment and documentations can be completed in ta shorter time and with greater efficiency and accuracy (ViNSiGN, 2005).

In global market sense, the appearance of E-commerce as a pioneer has opened up various windows of opportunities for a variety of other companies and investors. For instance, due to the booming and effectiveness of E-commerce, more and more resources are being directed into electronic securities, internet facilities, business plans and new technologies. In result of this phenomenon, a variety of new markets have emerged from E-commerce itself giving a boost to the global market (ViNSiGN, 2005).

1.1       AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this research is to take advantage of the e-commerce technology to provide a platform where the web designers can buy products from the models and where the model will display their work to the web designers for use. The objectives include:

  • Develop a distributed database system that can be access from any location that has internet connection
  • Design a website that will be displayed to the web designers to view the images and select them for buying.
  • Provide a system that will be available to web designers 24 hours of the day and 365 days of the year.
  • Development of a system that will enable the models to sign up and upload their various image shots for sale

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The challenges faced by web site designers when looking for images for their work usually include the following:

  • The images that are available are not in synchronization with the theme of the web site being designed,
  • The cost of setting up a photo shoot to get the exact images needed is expensive,
  • Access to models to poise for a particular picture is usually not available to the web designer,
  • The models that can do the work for the designer have no platform where they can meet with them.
  • The resolution of the images available might be lower than what the designer wants

1.3       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this final year project is to bridge the divide between the web designers and the models in such a way that will make it easy for them to meet on a common platform for their mutual benefit. Through the use of an electronic commerce site, both parties involved can have the platform where they can display their products, have their products viewed and purchased conveniently without having to seek for third parties. In this proposed platform, there won’t be much effect of destination barrier. With the use of internet, distance never becomes an issue because both parties can meet and agree on anything or transaction that they want with just the click of the mouse.

1.4       LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Ideally, an e-commerce platform should be able to allow and manage the purchasing and handling of transactions on the platform. However the handling of cash processing by the proposed system to be developed will be beyond the scope of this project research.
