  • INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS AN EDU-PORTAL? An Edu-portal is a short form of Educational portal. It is a website where students and staff can browse through to get relevant information concerning a section of a department in-charge of one particular activity (Evening programme directorate). Such relevant information includes: mode of admission, online news etc.

WHAT IS A PORTAL? A portal is an introductory page for a given topic. It complements the main article of the subject by introducing the reader to key articles, images and categories that further describes the subject. Portals also help editors find related project.

1.1 BACKGROUD OF STUDY

It is a known fact that information is power and the key in our society today. According to many experts and professionals in various field of study, the world is experiencing continuous and dynamic development in information and communication technology (ICT). The advanced society like ours has information as the fundamental resources and as a result we are living in a globalize information system, with a world economy which is always and continually dependent on the development, management and distribution of information resources. The advert of computer system and other information and communication technology system really brought in idea of globalization. The trends of events today are experiencing continuous technological changes in fact; distance is no more the greatest or one of the barriers to communication.

This advance have as a result of their developments been christen “information age” and soonest, will be entering into space age technology. This change is visually in all aspects of man’s life today, life changes in business transaction and environment, education, health, production and manufacturing, communication etc. are nothing but output of information and technology and mainly the internet, which is another area of computing.

The internet is an international network of computer system and other communication system which aid in sharing of information and communication. This is actually turning the world into a global village in that people can communicate and share important information irrespective of their geographical location.

Many Institution like financial institution, Institution of the higher learning, health Institution etc. are on the process of globalization. The computer system and elements of the contemporary global institution. The same influence is also pressurized on academic institution where the internet has re-structured and re-shaped academic activities almost in all sections. In academic institution that are looked unto the internet, the students and staff finds it easily to access and share information on-line such as on-line library, receiving lectures from remote locations and doing on-line research etc. however the major area and which forms the main interest of our study is the world wide web [www] which is the integral component of internet.

The World Wide Web is one of the fastest growing areas on the internet. As the name implies the World Wide Web is a universal mass of WebPages connected together through links. This is a great invention that allows us to be connected to the rest of the world. It grew from a project in 1989 at CERN in Switzerland. The Web is a large-scale   distributed hypermedia. (i.e. graphics, video, Audio, text etc) system based on network computers which are connected to the internet. Web pages are written using a special formatting language called Hyper Text Markup language (HTLM), which is continually evolving to meet the advancing demand of internet. Java and JavaScript ASP.Net, Microsoft SQL server database 2008 and Dream weaver is becoming popular. Web pages that are stored in computer can be easily access through the internet explorer, Netscape navigator, Mosaic etc.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

This project study all about design and implementation of an Edu-portal for the evening programme directorate of Federal Polytechnic Owerri. This is to help those who are interested in knowing about our academic work and profession, access the information from major sources due to lack of awareness about the evening programme activities.

Many students both within the institution and outside the institution are not properly aware of some vital information relating to the students in the evening programme section. This is the major problem that was encountered in this project.

 

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

Presently, the world is changing into a global village. The request for knowledge and information is highly increasing and then the internet is fast dominating all the aspects of life and many academic institutions are heading towards being looked to the internet. To this the aim of this study is to have the following objectives:-

  • Design and implement an edu-portal for Evening Programme Directorate of Federal polytechnic Nekede Owerri.
  • Enhancing the communication channel between the lecturers and the evening programme students.
  • Developing information about all the academic activities and other activities as it concerns the evening programme students and the institution as a whole.

1.4 PROSPECTS AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

After the design and implementation of an Edu-portal, it is expected to contribute much towards the development of knowledge and academic skills and this will be achieved though the following ways:-

  • Reduce information delivery delay.
  • Create an avenue for both students and staff to browse and research through the internet for relevant materials of their choice such as news report etc.
  • Promotion of genuine information for the students in morning section and the public.
  • Provide avenue for the students and staff to interact and other academic system.

However, the website will as well create awareness on the status of academic activities in the institution.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study or design covered the following about the departments in the evening programme sections:

  • Development of e-mail for the departments in the evening programme sections.
  • Knowing the admission regiments of the departments in the evening programme sections.
  • Courses offered in the departments of the evening programme sections.
  • General information of the evening programme activities in various departments.

 

1.6 LIMITATIONS

There are some limitations encountered when carrying out this research work such as:

  • Non availability of enough finance.
  • Non availability of enough research materials.
  • Time factors.

 

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

This research work is in the line with many terminologies which are mainly used in the scripting, most of the terms will be confusing for novice and some of information systems. Many of these terms are defined here for clarity.

They include:-

WEB BROWSER: The tool (program) that allows you to surf the web. It is used to locate web pages. E.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator etc.

CLIENT: A networked computer that requests resources or services from another computer, usually a server.

DATA: A collection of facts, figures, marts, images etc stored in an order that is fit to be processed.

DREAMWEAVER: This is the industry based web development tool, enabling users to efficiently design, developed and maintains websites.

HTML (Hyper text Mark-up Language):- It is not a programming language but it is a formatting language used to create web pages.
