CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

Unified notification systems provide asynchronous communications across different entities in distributed systems; on the other hand Web Services (WS) technologies direct the interoperability issues in heterogeneous distributed systems. Web services based (WS-based) event notification systems combine features of both (Yi & Gannon, 2016).

This study presents the design of a suitable software system and an application framework that can fill this gap: delivering information services with mobile functionality to content subscribers-Students, while for the content Providers – University Information Units, assuring a reliable and guaranteed medium for information dissemination.

Communicating information to hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people is a common occurrence for tertiary institution (Mitchell et al., 2019). With the growing population of Federal University Lafia on yearly basis, there is a need for a unified notification system that can handle the dissemination of mass notification to the growing population of staff and students.

A Unified Notification System can facilitate and enhance mass alerts in multiple ways, including through calls, emails, SMS, and more. This ensures safer students and a faster resolution to emergency situations (Rendulić et al., 2018).

This study intends to develop and implement a Unified Notification System for Federal University of Lafia, so as to facilitate and enhance mass alerts in multiple ways, including through calls, emails, SMS, and more.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

Mobile phone play a major role in people life today, it’s function has been extended from voice communication only devices to internet surfing and data transfer, people has developed attachment to the mobile phone and keep it as a companion for everyday life (Adams and Millard, 2018).

Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) as a higher education institute, hold and organize numerous events throughout the academic year. Some of these events or functions are either based in FULAFIA itself or it receives invitations to participate at some functions outside the FULAFIA in other universities. Therefore, it’s the university’s administration responsibility to name the staff members that will attend and participate in any specific event or function by notifying them about the function they are expected to participate.

The current procedure followed by FULAFIA is by sending emails to the selected staff and students to notify them about the event or function they are supposed to attend. The notification will include details about that event like what is the function about and the date and the place of that function.

The email notification to announce to the staff and students the function is suffering from two main drawbacks which are:

First, some of the staff and students do not check his/her email periodically, so they may miss read the notification email about the function and therefore they will not attend the function. Second, sometimes internet service is not available or the staff and students might be at some place where they cannot access internet which will lead also to make them unaware about the function or the notification about that function.

It is in light of the above stated problems that this study aims to design and develop a unified notification system in order to be used by FULAFIA to send the notifications direct to the staff and students’ cell phone as SMS message and thus helps in make sure that the notification is delivered to all interested staff and students.

1.3       Aim and Objectives of the Study

1.3.1    Aim

The major aim of the study is to design and implement a Unified Notification System for Federal University of Lafia.

1.3.2    Objectives

The objectives of the study are:

  1. To identify the requirements and design of the system (Unified Notification System).
  2. To develop and test the prototype.
  • To develop a system that can provide the administration with a tool to notify both staff and students about functions that will occur in Fulafia.

1.4       Scope of the Study

This project work focus mainly on the design and implementation of a Unified Notification System that can be applicable to any tertiary institution in Nigeria but with particular reference to Federal University of Lafia.

1.5       Significance of the Study

Developing and successfully implementing the Unified Notification System for Federal University of Lafia will return many benefits to the university as follow:

  1. Support the current email communications processes at the Federal University of Lafia.
  2. Provide a means of communicating with members of the Federal University of Lafia community at various organizational levels in case of any event or function.
  • Afford staff and university management assurance and comfort and a convenient communication Channel.

1.6       Limitation of the Study

This study “Design and Implementation of a Unified Notification System for Federal University of Lafia” has the following limitations:

  1. The system is only limited to Federal University of Lafia.
  2. The system is a web application; hence, it requires internet connectivity to access it.

1.7       Definition of Terms

Unified: is defined as to make or become a single unit.

Notification: the act or an instance of giving notice or information.

System: system is a combination or arrangement of parts to form an integrated whole. A system includes an orderly arrangement according to some common principles or rules.

Unified Notification System: a technique to distribute the data which notifies the consumers asynchronously based on the interest match with the event published by sender or producer.

Short Message Service (SMS): commonly referred to as “text messaging,” is a service for sending short messages of up to 160 characters (224 characters if using a 5-bit mode) to mobile devices, including cellular phones, smartphones and PDAs.

Short Messaging Service Center (SMSC): is a network element in the mobile telephone network. Its purpose is to store, forward, convert and delivers Short Message Service (SMS) messages.

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP): is an internet standard communication protocol for electronic mail transmission. Mail servers and other message transfer agents use SMTP to send and receive mail messages.

Web Application: is application software that runs on a web server, unlike computer-based software programs that are run locally on the operating system (OS) of the device. Web applications are accessed by the user through a web browser with an active network connection.
