DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ALLOCATION OF SUPERVISORS TO SIWES STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This is a skill acquisition programme designed to expose students in the institution to the “world of work”. Students in their 3rd or 4th year compulsorily spend 6-12 months on the firm and in the relevant industry, to practice and utilize their knowledge.

The students Industrial Work Experience scheme (SIWES) is a skill-training programme aimed at exposing students of higher institutions of learning to the work situation in the labour markets relevant to their field of study.

The programme prepares students for industrial work they are likely to meet after graduation thus bridging the gap between their theoretical works in programme they are exposed, to machinery which are not usually available in the institution.

According to (Akerejola, 2008), acquisition of practical skill is an antidote to meaningful development in any society. The practical knowledge is learning without which mastery of an area of knowledge may be too difficult to achieve and that practical knowledge involves developing skills through the use of tools or equipment to perform tasks that are related to a field of study.

The federal government of Nigeria introduced the SIWES Scheme in tertiary institutions in 1974 to ensure acquisition of field practical knowledge and skills by students before graduation.

SIWES was established by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills in preparation for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.

The scheme exposes students to industry based skills that are necessary for smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work and it gives the students opportunity to be part of real work situation outside the lecture room. Participation in SIWES is a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions 2008). Yodeled (1990) states that work experience is an educational program in which students participate in work activities while attending school.

SIWES is a core academic requirement carrying four credit units. Thee Eze (1998) points out that government has recognized the importance of SIWES through the establishment of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

The ITG was established in 1971 and was charged with human resources development and training. Following the establishment of ITF,

1.2     Statement of the Problem

The ICT environment has created a new modus operandi for the LIS profession by virtue of new tools for information exchange. Jesting and Parameswari (2002) recognize the challenges when they note that the library profession in India, like their colleagues everywhere, particularly those serving high-tech institutions, are already subject to challenges resulting from ICT.

They assert that the new technology may call for organizational change in the traditional library and that librarians may function more like consulting information engineers than as the traditional, passive custodians of information and dispersers of documents.

ICT created a new digital environment that led to the development of digitization, the conversion of print and other formats to digital form, as an enhanced storage and preservation technique.

Digital libraries are one result of these new information acquisition and distribution techniques. A digital library is described by Ershova and Hohlov (1999) as “a distributed information system ensuring reliable storage and effective use of heterogeneous collections of electronic documents (texts, graphics, video, audio, etc.) via global data transfer networks in a way convenient for the end user.” Oppenheim and Smithson (1999) describe a digital library as an information service in which all information resources are available in computer process able form and the functions of acquisition.

1.3     Aim and Objectives of the study.

The aim and objectives of this study are:

  1. To examine the impact of students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) on the student after completion of the programme.
  2. To examine the effectiveness of students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES)towards student development.
  • To examine the relationship between students industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) and employability after graduation.
  1. To identify all the allocation parameters required for SIWES Supervisors Allocation.
  2. To build a system that can capture the Identified Allocation Parameters above.
  3. A review of literature on how tertiary institutions SIWES supervision allocation is being conducted.
  4. Allocation parameters such as distance, location, conversant nature of the lecturers with student’s places of attachment were
  5. To allocate SIWES supervisor to students on industrial trainingbased on and accurate.

1.4 Significant Of Study

The following are the significant of the study:

  • The outcome of this study will form a useful guide for university management on how restructure the students work experience scheme (SIWES) with a bid to realize the objective of the programme.
  • This research will also serve as a resource base to other scholars and researchers interested in carrying out further research in this field. Subsequently, if applied will go to an extent to provide new explanation to the topic

1.5 Scope of the study

This study is the impact of student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) on student after completion of the will cover how the programmed is been organized and implemented

1.6 Limitation of the study

Limitation of study are:

  • Financial constraint; insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection(internet questionnaire and interview)
  • Time constraint; the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work

1.7 Definition of the Terms

  • Siwes; Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme
  • Supervisors; is the person who controlling body of corporations that controls the administration for the associates. or the person who over sees and directs the work of others
  • Allocation; is the act of assigning various hours of one’s day, week or year to a particular activities. Or is the place in which a student run his/her training during the siwes. excises
  • System; Is A combination of two or more computer to communicate with one another
