CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Android is a completely open platform for third-party software developers, it has greater freedom in its development program, breaking the shackles of the traditional mobile phone. Mobile learning is a combination of computing power of mobile terminals and wireless network transmission capacity and the formation of a new mode of learning.

Android is open source mobile phone operating system developed by Google based on the Linux platform. It includes operating systems, user interface and applications – work required of the mobile phone all the software, but there is no exclusive rights of obstacles hinder the mobile industry, innovation. Google and Open Handset Alliance to develop Android, leader of the alliance by more than 30 technology and wireless applications, including China Mobile, Motorola, Qualcomm, HTC and T-Mobile.

Distinguish between types of mobile terminals and wireless networks; mobile learning can be divided into generalized mobile learning and narrow the mobile learning into two categories: general mobile learning users can use a variety of mobile terminals such as mobile phones, PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) with even wireless card for laptops, learning through mobile communication networks, wireless local area network.

 

1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main idea of the topic is to implement an application with the help of which users can learn HTML at their own pace on their mobile devices, anywhere and at anytime.

Others include:

  1. To develop an android based tutorial application which will help students to learn HTML via their mobile devices
  2. To provide alternative way of attaining education
  3. To facilitate the development of Android technology
  4. To enhance learning in a very fast, easy, and convenience way
  5. To reveal the use of HTML as a markup language for designing website.

1.2 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY   

Android Based HTML tutorial will provide benefits for the learners and individuals involved.

Improved performance: it is interactive to the students thereby improving their productivity.

It improves standard of learning web language.

Increased access: it enables people from any part of the world to be educated.

Convenience and flexibility to learners: learning process is structured in units; this makes the learner study at his/her own convenience without getting too bored with lectures.

 

1.3 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This project is an HTML tutorial and learning application running on Android technology and devices. The project is designed using Android Studio with the aid of Java and XML programming language.

The scope of this study will be strictly on HTML as a web language, for website developers precisely. This will be done to enable the students to be fully baked and grinded on this wonderful area of learning.

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose or aim of the study is to provide an android application on android enabled devices where the students who use the application gather facts on any information they want on HTML and hence help them learn HTML very fast and easily. This will help to improve student’s attitude and make them to become good programmers.

Another point is also to enable student become versatile with HTML, as a programming language. Since we are in the computer age, information and communication technology has cropped in every nook and cranny of this world.

As a matter of fact, the project is going to be uploadedon Google Play Store to allow students download it and thus enhance their intellectual capabilities and learn HTML beyond the traditional classroom lecture.

 

1.5 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Due to the problems students find and experiences in learning HTML manually, this application will make learning easy for students to acquire basic and necessary skillin web designing at their own pace.

There are numerous problems with the manually learning method.  These in-adequacies are enumerated below:

Inability for the adequate resources to be accessed 24/7.

Inadequate practical in the classroom, hence making programming difficult for learners.

 

1.6 LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

Due to financial constrains, people cannot afford this form of learning and measurement, especially towards the cost of accessing the internet.

Also, the rate of technology is moving at rapid speed and not everybody understands how some of the tools used for this education process are used.

 

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

 

Android SDK: The Android SDK (software development kit) is a set of development tools used to develop applications for Android platform.

Android: Android is a software for mobile phones, tablets and a growing range of devices covering everything from wearable computing to in-car entertainment.

Android is also a mobile operating system developed by Google. It is used by several smartphones and tablets.

XML – Extended Markup Language: is commonly used as the format for receiving server data, although any format, including plain text, can be used.

ADB: ABD stands for Android Debug Bridge, a tool that is used primarily by developers to send commands from a computer to android.

APK: Android Application Package file used to distribute and install applications.

Android Manifest: Describes the fundamental characteristics of the application and defines each of its components.

Debugger: A debugger is a computer program used by programmers to test and debug a target program.

Java: Java is a programming language that produces software for multiple platforms.

IOS: iOS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple. It was originally named the iPhone OS, but was renamed to the iOS in June, 2009.

File Transfer:       Any kind of computer file can be sent via the Internet from one Internet user to another. Table of accounts on spreadsheets, design by a graphic artists, music sound files etc, can all be exchanged in this way.

Offline:       Disconnected from computer network; describes a computer terminal or peripheral device disconnected from a computer network.

System:  Set of computer components that is, an assembling of hardware,

HTML – this is one of the programming languages which could be used for developing web documents.HTML stands for hypertext markup language. Other languages that could be for web development are XML (Extended Markup Language) and XHTML (Extended Hypertext Markup Language).

Programming language – this is a set of operation of grammatical rules (syntax or protocol) use for written and developing instructional codes given to the computer for task performance.

Interpreter – this is a kind language translator that translates high level programming codes equivalent and at the same time executes the program codes line after line, this is achieved if and only if the line of code is error free.

Compiler – this is a kind of language translator that translates high level programming language code into its low level programming language codes equivalent and makes it executable only if this entire program code is error free.

CAL – this stands For Computer Assisted Learning. It is an application package that is designed to enable the user learn a particular subject through the provision of tutorial that may or may not companied by questions.

CAI – this is an abbreviation of Computer Aided Instruction. It is an application package that is designed to enable the user learn and/or get acquainted with a specific subject or an aspect of life.

 TUTORIAL: A tutorial is a method of transferring knowledge and may be used as a part of a learning process.
