CHAPTER ONE

  • GENERAL OVERVIEW

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Before the invention of computer jobs were done manually. The jobs were prone to errors, jobs were delayed because job processing consumed much time and it involves much human labour. The use of computer in this dispensation cannot be over emphasized. Idowu et al,(2006). Hospitals now use computer for diagnosis, keeping records of patient for easy retrieval and for future use. Government agencies, public and private firms use computer to solve their problems. The computers high processing speed, degree of accuracy in data processing and large storage has made it more vulnerably used in the society today. Wikipedia (2016).With the aid of computers, many organizations have been able to keep information safe, reduce the time taken to process data and to avoid duplication effort.  Kenenan,et al., (2006).

The introduction of computer into the information technology has tremendously effect on the information of organizations and the word in general. Every system of organization that is still none computerized is now becoming computerized. An organization is a changing and ongoing system in which people and resources Interact in a rational and orderly manner to accomplish common goals. Svensson. (2002).This Project therefore an organized fact finding mission aimed at providing a comprehensive and most reliable and of added advantages for both the customer and for restaurants who participate in online ordering. First, a customer can order at will when they have time to.  Also, the customer is able to customize their order without errors in communication between the customer and the person taking the order. In addition to customer advantages, the restaurant is able to take more orders with less staff. The restaurant does not need a waiter or hostess to be on the phone to take the order. The order can go straight to the kitchen. Soder, (2007). The procedure for food ordering and delivery follows a manual procedure. As a result of the problems associated with manual process, such as waste of time makes the transformation of the system from manual processing to an online system with the aid of a computer. Soder, (2007).

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Aim

The primary aim of this project is to design and develop software that will fasten the way of ordering food through online without going to the restaurant, and to improve current process on ordering transaction and offer better service to customers, and also to design, develop and implement an online product catalog that would display the product by category for easy browsing.

Objectives

This study lays out a framework for a new system to developed and brought to the market for maxim mum use and to an avenue through the web where users can log on to our server and make a selection of whatever goods or food they like and subsequently pay via internet. The following are the objectives this would bring :

  1. The home page of this web interfile provides an avenue where customers will be able to gather more and reliable information about what the fast food industry really does.
  2. The product and services offered would provide the customers with all the different categories of available products that they can choose and select from.
  • Payment can be done either by credit card or cash or use of electronic payment system, with the restaurant returning a percentage to the online food.
  1. This will provide a user friendly environment between the customer and employee thus increasing the efficiency of the food ordering system.
  2. There will also be an online purchase form with which valued customers will be using to get in touch with any of their request whenever the need arises.
  3. It will also help for easy retrieval of orders made by the customers.
  • The restaurant does not need a waiter or hostess to be on the phone to take the order.

1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The manual systems of food ordering in restaurants has a number of undesirable demerit, among these is customers not able to ask about quality of food or ask for any specialized diet foods. It is more difficult to ask for gluten free or allergy free foods with online ordering. Also, it is more possible for a customer to place an order, but never pick up the order which can lead to waste of food and possibly a loss of profits.

The problems that this project is set to solve in the manual method of food ordering which will allow consumers the ability to place an ordering or   producing food online. Consumers place an order online based on what is available for the ordering cycle (month, week) and then pick up and pay for their orders at a central location.

1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Scope

The scope of this study is centered on designing a web based portal for ordering food from restaurant through a web page or application. Much like ordering consumer goods online, many of these allow customers to keep accounts with them in order to make frequent ordering convenient. A customer will search for a favorite restaurant, usually filtered via type of cuisine and choose from available items, and choose delivery or pick-up.

Limitation

This research work is strictly limited to Madam UN food restaurant in Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru using a computerized/ online method of food ordering system.

As a result of the problems associated with manual process, such as waste of time makes the transformation of the system from manual processing to an online ordering system with the aid of a computer.
