CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0     INTRODUCTION

Security has becoming an important issue everywhere. Home security is becoming necessary nowadays as the possibilities of intrusion are increasing day by day. Safety from theft, leaking of raw gas and fire are the most important requirements of home security system for people. Security is an important aspect or feature in the smart home applications. The new and emerging concept of smart homes offers a comfortable, convenient, and safe environment for occupants. Conventional security systems keep homeowners, and their property, safe from intruders by giving the indication in terms of alarm (Jighan, 2013).

Home security includes both the security hardware placed on a property and individuals’ personal security practices. Security hardware includes doors, locks, alarm systems, lighting, motion detectors, and security camera systems. Personal security involves practices like ensuring doors are locked, alarms are activated, owning a Dog, windows are closed, and extra keys are not hidden outside (Shera et al., 2011). Today, home security system manufacturers and alarm monitoring services offer a variety of ways for users to monitor their home’s security system even when users are away from their home on vacation or simply away because of work. Modern alarm systems can notify owners of changes in their alarm system status by paging them. While these innovations are certainly useful and offer more peace of mind about home security, they are not the most exciting technologies used in many home security systems.

Various home security system has been developed where the communication link is using Bluetooth, RFID, Android application and short message services (SMS). All of this have different approach of home security system but serve the same purpose which is to monitor the security and safety of homes. Home security using Internet of Things focusing on the safety, security and comfort for the user to feel secure at home. New technology and devices had made people’s life more comfortable and convenient. Due to this, implementing or installing a home security system is has been a disinclination to home owners. Next, home security using Internet of Things can be consider as high-end products. The concept of home security originally consists of a product that is complex, high cost and incompatibility with existing devices. This is due to the devices and type of microcontroller used which make it quite expensive ( McKinm et al., 2013).

Due to the increasingly rapid movement of people, making them requires a security technology that has the characteristics of mobile technology in terms of getting information easily and quickly. Security is one thing that is very influential in today life, everyone needs security guarantees when they work. As technology is still evolving, there is not a specific appropriate standard to define a ‘smart home’ nor a distinctive features to classifying ‘smart home’ in relation to various related terms used and from similar other systems. We can say home system as ‘smarter’ due to collective intelligence of individual home appliances, all electronics and non electronic items in collaboration with other devices in surroundings (Perseta, 2016).

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Home security system basically began with video surveillance technology which started in 1940s, and it was not widely expected until the 1970s. An early advancement was made in 1966 when nurse Marie Van Brittan Brown invented the first home video security system. It was the first time a remote control could be used to open a door. Home security systems or home automation, began to increase in popularity in the early 2000s. In this era, the first security system uses a web camera, installed in house premises, which is operated by software installed on the PC and it uses Internet for communication. The camera detects motion of any intruder in front of the camera dimensions or camera range. The software communicates to the intended user via Internet network and at the same time it gives sound alert. As such, different technology began to emerge. Smart homes suddenly became a more affordable option, and therefore a viable technology for consumers.

According to Kngzets (2011), the integration of the mobile phone and a surveillance system into home security system becomes more meaningful so that people can monitor the security of their properties anytime, anywhere. Domestic technologies, home networking, and other gadgets began to appear on store shelves. Today’s smart homes are more about security and living greener. Home security systems are sustainable, and they help to ensure that homes are not expending unnecessary energy. They also help alert us to intruders (whether we are home or not).

Home security has changed a lot from the last century and will be changing in coming years. Security is an important aspect or feature in the smart home applications. The new and emerging concept of smart homes offers a comfortable, convenient, and safe environment for occupants. Conventional security systems keep homeowners, and their property, safe from intruders by giving the indication in terms of alarm. However, a smart home security system offers many more benefits (Mior, 2009).

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Crime in Nigeria is a huge problem, and as such home and personal security threats are something that all Nigerians experience on a daily basis. Although homes, businesses and people spend a significant amount of money on security fees and systems, many problems and weaknesses still exist within the systems that we use today. A residence without a home security system is approximately three times more likely to be broken into than one without. Home owners who have home security systems loose less in valuables in the event of a robbery. These facts prove that the installation of a home security system dissuades intruders and protects your home. Thus, having a smart home security system may decrease the chances of a burglary.

1.3     AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this project is to develop a home security system that will allow its users to monitor multiple home appliances and prevent intrusion using fingerprint security systems.

The objective(s) of this study are stated as follows;

  • To design a home security system for safety, security and comfort for the users to feel secured at home
  • To implement the system using appropriate tools
  • To demonstrate the implementation of fingerprint technology in home security system
  • To provide a better options of home security other than just building of strong hold doors

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Due to the increasingly rapid movement of people, making them requires a security technology that has the characteristics of mobile technology in terms of getting information easily and quickly. In essence, the result of this study will equip home managers, hotel managers and individuals on enhancing the security of their homes and properties. The study will serve as a background for further studies in this related subject matter as it will serve as reference material for further work in this regard.

1.5     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study focus on the implementing a home security system using biometric technology and computer system technology.

1.6     LIMITATION OF STUDY

Time factor was the greatest barrier to the successful completion of this exercise since it had to be done within the semester. I also had financial constraints since all the activities involved were self sponsored.

1.7     DEFINITION OF TERMS
