CHAPTER ONE
- Introduction
Power Holding Company of Nigeria is a company charged with the responsibility of distributing electricity to Nigerian Consumers in exchange for a bill. This implies that PHCN has a billing system.
However, there is a challenge of collecting bills from all power consumers in the country so as to facilitate the operations of the firms.
This has necessitated various forms of payment used by PHCN to collect bills as they need to go to the district office which may be miles away from their location making payment a cumbersome task. This situation demands for a more effective way of obtaining bill payments.
The internet has revolutionized the way transactions take place in the world today. With evolution of electronic commerce, transaction can be carried out over the internet and payments made using credit card, debit card to make payments. Banks issue out these cards to their customers under strict rules with the card number, cash can be transferred electronically from the consumer to the account of this merchant which is in the case PHCN.
Every customer In PHCN has an account that uniquely represents the customer’s record. This makes it possible for customers to check their account status online before and after payment.
- Statement of Problem
The problem encountered is that the present method of collecting is such that a large percentage of the Electricity bills consumers find bills, it inconvenient to make payments for reason which include, the location of the district office and the queue. The brings about loss as the expected amount of payment is not attained by PHCN.
- Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this research is to develop a web-based system for payment of PHCN Electricity bills.
The research also feels to achieve the following objectives:
- To understand the concept and operation of an online payment system.
- To understand and easy way of making payments of PHCN.
- Significance of the Study
The significance of the study is that it will provide an easy way of making payments of PHCN bills using the internet. This implies that payments can be made from any location at the customer’s convenience and at any time.
- Scope of Study
This study covers online payment system of PHCN bills, how it operates, the advantages and limitations and the concepts of online payment system.
- Limitation of the Study
The following are the limitations of the study:
Time: The time given to implement a research work of this magnitude is too short.
Materials: Few materials pertaining to the research work was found.
Finance: The high cost of browsing the internet, purchasing materials and even making enquiries online limited the research work.
Power Supply: The epileptic nature of power supply also limited the research work as systems could not be powered when needed.
1.6 Organization of Research
This research work is organized into five (5) chapters as elaborated below: Chapter one: This chapter is concerned with the general introduction of the research work, it also contains, the statement of the problem, Aim and Objectives, etc. chapter two: This chapter is concerned with the literature review. It examines the operations of an online payment system, models of an online payment system electronic bill presentation and payment, importance of an online payment system. Limitations and analysis of existing system. Chapter Three: this chapter is concerned with the research methodology which includes the system design, input file specification, algorithm and program flow chart.
Chapter Four: This chapter is concerned with the system implementation. It presents the system flow chart, choice of programming language.
Chapter Five: This chapter summarizes, concludes and offers recommendation based on the research work.
- Definition of Terms
Online: Revering internet.
System: A set of components working together to achieve a particular aim.
B2B: Business to Business transaction.
B2B: Business to consumer transaction.
Credit Card: Small card containing a means of identification, such as a signature or picture, that authorizes the person named on it to charge goods or services to an account, for which the cardholder is billed periodically.
Debit Card: Is a card, similar to a credit card offering means of paying for a purchase through transfer of funds for purchasers bank account to the vendor.
EBPP: Electronic bill presentation and payment.
