CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students studying French Language in Nigeria has been a subject of considerable research. According to Aina (2013), instructional materials play a significant role in enhancing the teaching and learning process. The study found that the use of instructional materials in teaching French Language in Nigerian schools significantly improved students’ understanding and retention of the subject matter. This is because these materials make learning more concrete, practical, and meaningful, thereby enhancing students’ academic performance.

In a similar vein, a study by Oyedele and Ojo (2015) revealed that the use of instructional materials in teaching French Language in Nigerian junior secondary schools positively influenced students’ academic performance. The study found that students taught with instructional materials performed better in French Language than those taught without them. This is because instructional materials stimulate students’ interest in the subject matter, making learning more enjoyable and effective.

However, despite the proven benefits of instructional materials, their use in teaching French Language in Nigerian junior secondary schools is still limited. According to a study by Ogunyemi (2017), many Nigerian schools lack adequate instructional materials for teaching French Language. This lack of resources hampers the effective teaching and learning of the subject, thereby negatively affecting students’ academic performance.

Furthermore, the quality of instructional materials used in teaching French Language in Nigerian junior secondary schools is also a critical factor. A study by Adeyemi (2018) found that the use of high-quality instructional materials significantly improved students’ academic performance in French Language. This is because high-quality materials are more effective in facilitating understanding and retention of the subject matter.

The use of instructional materials in teaching French Language in Nigerian junior secondary schools significantly influences students’ academic performance. However, the availability and quality of these materials are critical factors that need to be addressed to maximize their benefits. Therefore, there is a need for Nigerian educational authorities to invest more in providing adequate and high-quality instructional materials for teaching French Language in junior secondary schools.

  • Statement of the Problem

The problem of the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria is a multifaceted issue that requires thorough examination. The French language, being a second language in Nigeria, poses a significant challenge to students, especially at the junior secondary level. The problem is further compounded by the lack of adequate and effective instructional materials (Oyewole & Yara, 2011).

The instructional materials currently in use in many Nigerian schools are often outdated and do not align with the modern pedagogical approaches to teaching French. This misalignment could be a significant factor contributing to the poor performance of students in the subject (Adeyemi, 2012). The lack of interactive and engaging instructional materials may lead to a lack of interest and motivation among students, which in turn affects their academic performance.

Furthermore, the problem is not just about the availability of instructional materials, but also their quality and appropriateness. Many of the instructional materials used in teaching French in Nigerian schools are not contextually relevant, making it difficult for students to relate the lessons to their immediate environment (Omoogun, 2013). This disconnect can negatively impact students’ understanding and retention of the subject matter.

The issue is further complicated by the lack of training and support for teachers in the use of these instructional materials. Many teachers lack the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize these materials to enhance learning outcomes (Aina, 2014). This lack of teacher competence in the use of instructional materials can significantly affect the quality of instruction and, consequently, students’ academic performance.

Moreover, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the impact of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French in Nigeria. Most of the existing studies focus on the general impact of instructional materials on academic performance, with little attention given to the specific context of teaching French in Nigeria (Ogunyinka, 2015).

The problem of the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive approach. It involves addressing the quality and relevance of instructional materials, enhancing teacher competence in their use, and conducting more context-specific research to provide empirical evidence on the issue (Ogunyinka, 2015).

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The study examines the influence of instructional materials on academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Agege LGA. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To examine the extent to which the use of instructional materials influences the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria.
  2. To identify the types of instructional materials that are most effective in improving the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language.
  3. To assess the availability and accessibility of instructional materials for teaching French Language in junior secondary schools in Nigeria.
  4. To investigate the teachers’ perception of the importance of instructional materials in teaching French Language to junior secondary students.

  • Research Questions

The research questions for the study are stated below:

  1. To what extent does the use of instructional materials influence the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria?
  2. What types of instructional materials are most effective in improving the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language?
  3. How available and accessible are instructional materials for teaching French Language in junior secondary schools in Nigeria?
  4. What are the teachers’ perceptions of the importance of instructional materials in teaching French Language to junior secondary students?

  • Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement for the study is buttressed below:

Ho: The use of instructional materials has no significant influence on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria.

H1: The use of instructional materials has significant influence on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria.

  • Significance of the Study

The significance of the study on the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Lagos is manifold. Firstly, it provides an in-depth understanding of the role instructional materials play in enhancing students’ comprehension and performance in French Language. This is particularly important in a multilingual country like Nigeria where French is a second language for many students, and effective teaching methods are crucial for language acquisition.

This study could serve as a valuable resource for educators and policy makers in Lagos and beyond. By identifying the types of instructional materials that are most effective, educators can make informed decisions about the resources they use in their classrooms. Similarly, policy makers can use these findings to guide educational policies and resource allocation.

The study could contribute to the existing body of knowledge on language education in Nigeria. Despite the importance of language education, there is a dearth of research focusing on the effectiveness of instructional materials in this context. This study could therefore fill this gap and provide a foundation for future research.

Fourthly, the study could have implications for the students themselves. By improving the quality of French language instruction, students could experience increased academic performance, which could in turn open up more opportunities for them in the future.

The study could also have implications for the teachers. Understanding the importance of instructional materials could help them to better plan their lessons and use their resources more effectively. This could not only improve their teaching practice, but also their job satisfaction and professional development.

Lastly, the study could have broader societal implications. Language education is not only important for individual academic achievement, but also for social cohesion and economic development. By improving language education, we could therefore contribute to the broader development goals of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.
