INTRODUCTION

According to Akin-Little, Little, and Laniti (2007), classroom management involves the strategies, skills, and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive. In the Nigerian context, classroom management is often challenged by large class sizes, inadequate resources, and socio-cultural factors (Adeyemo, 2010). However, effective classroom management can significantly enhance the teaching-learning process, leading to improved academic performance and overall student development.

The role of teachers in classroom management cannot be overemphasized. As posited by Evertson and Weinstein (2006), teachers are the primary agents of classroom management, and their effectiveness in this role significantly influences the quality of teaching and learning. In Nigerian private junior secondary schools, teachers often employ a variety of strategies to manage their classrooms, including setting clear rules and expectations, using positive reinforcement, and implementing effective instructional strategies (Ogbonnaya, 2013). These strategies, when effectively implemented, can create a conducive learning environment that promotes student engagement and academic achievement.

However, the effectiveness of classroom management in Nigerian private junior secondary schools is often hampered by several challenges.   • Operational Definition of Terms

Classroom Management: This refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during a class. It involves creating a positive learning environment, setting clear rules and expectations, and implementing strategies to prevent and manage misbehavior.

 

  1. Effective: In the context of teaching and learning, ‘effective’ refers to methods, strategies, or techniques that produce a significant or desired outcome or result. An effective teacher, for example, is one who is able to facilitate learning and improve student achievement.

 

  1. Teaching: Teaching is the process of imparting knowledge, skills, and attitudes from a teacher to a learner. It involves a range of strategies, including direct instruction, facilitation, and guided discovery, to help learners understand and apply concepts.

 

  1. Learning: Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences. It involves cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences and experiences for acquiring, enhancing, or making changes in one’s knowledge, skills, values, and world views.

 Private Junior Secondary Schools: These are privately funded educational institutions that cater to students in the junior secondary level, typically between the ages of 12-15. They are not funded by the government and are usually funded by tuition fees paid by the students’ parents or guardians. They often have more flexibility in their curriculum and teaching methods compared to public schools.
