The Importance of Studying English as a Discipline in School

The Importance of Studying English as a Discipline in School

There are several reasons why it’s important to study English in school. First, English is the most frequently spoken language, so learning it may help you connect with people and get work done in countless ways. A solid command of English is necessary for success in school, advancement in one’s work, and enrichment in one’s personal life.

Second, learning English helps pupils hone their analytical and critical thinking abilities. Students develop their ability to think critically, reason logically, and articulate their own viewpoints via the study of literature. In addition to their use in the study of English, these abilities will be useful in a wide variety of professional and personal contexts.

Learning English also improves pupils’ ability to express themselves in writing and in conversation. Students can better articulate their ideas and views through the medium of written essays, reports, and creative works. They learn how to organise their thoughts, find evidence to back up their assertions, and craft arguments that have an impact. These abilities are in great demand in the workforce and may be applied in a variety of academic settings.

Furthermore, students who major in English literature have an understanding of many cultures, viewpoints, and historical periods. It helps them become more empathetic and tolerant global citizens. Reading works by a wide range of writers helps pupils develop a more nuanced understanding of the world and its peoples.

However, there are difficulties associated with formal English education. The sheer volume of reading assigned is a major obstacle. Novels, plays, poetry, and essays all make up part of the vast canon of English literature that students are expected to read. Students who have many classes at once may find it difficult to complete all of their reading assignments on time.

The subjective character of literary interpretation presents still another difficulty. Students may have difficulty grasping the more nuanced meanings and themes of texts because of the subjectivity involved in literary interpretation and analysis. Those who prefer more tangible topics may find this frustrating and confusing.

Furthermore, some students may struggle with essay and literary analysis writing. Argumentation, evidence, and cognitive organisation are all skills that benefit from practise and development. Students may struggle to express themselves clearly in writing, which can impact their academics and self-esteem.

In sum, it’s clear that learning English as a subject in school is crucial. It teaches students how to effectively communicate, think critically, and analyse data. It teaches them to care about others and improves their general knowledge and perspective. Nonetheless, it includes obstacles like lengthy reading lists and the subjective character of literary interpretation. Despite these obstacles, studying English is worthwhile because of the many opportunities it provides.
