CHAPTER ONE

1.0      INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

The word Hospitality derives from the Hospes, meaning “host” “guest” or “stranger”. Hospes is formed from hosts, which means “stranger”. In west today hospitality is rarely matter of protection and survival, and is more associated with etiquette and entertainment. However, it still involves showing respect for one’s guest, providing for their needs and treating them as equal. Culture and sub-culture vary in the extent to which one is expected to show hospitality to strangers, as opposition personal friends or numbers of one in group. Hospitality, this is a discipline that studies the usage of hospitality  (Akpabio, 2010).

In today’s society, the general population understands that cultural beliefs have significant effects on general performance of hospitality industry. These cultural beliefs usually translate to different perceptions causing discrepancies in the establishment and patronage of hospitality facilities such as hotel, restaurants, amusement parks, resorts etc. With globalization in full speed and people continually traveling abroad to and from different countries, the hotel industry faces many challenges in accommodating these different cultural beliefs (Seo, 2012).

Taylor (1991) defined culture as “that complex whole, which includes shared ideas, knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, custom and any capabilities and habits acquire by man as a member of society”. He contended that, though culture is something that cannot be seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted; it has been in continuous existence for years. Incidentally, culture is very real, and so important that without it, human societies would be quite impossible. According to the National Technical Working Committee on culture, tourism and National Re-orientation(2007), “culture is what we collectively make of the raw ingredients of life” and the physical and environmental endowments of nature. In this way culture is as Goldbard (2004) said “culture is sum-total of human ingenuity; language, signs and symbols, system of belief, customs, clothes, cuisine tools, toys and trinkets, the built environment and everything we use to fill it up”.

Ifegbo (2005) stated that history tells us that our fore-fathers offered hospitality and tourism services to strangers willingly. They were in the habit of being their brothers keepers. Our fore fathers practiced hospitality even before the arrival of the “white man”. However, it was the colonialists that commercialized hospitality as trade and commerce in Nigeria. Since tourism has become a major industry in many countries, the hospitality industry has also become very important. Hospitality or hotel industry is one of the largest industries in the tourism sector which has played a vital role in the tourism industry especially in providing tourist with the needed comfort in any tourist destination (Laws, 1995). It is an agent of economic and social change, a service-based industry of creating employment and income (World Tourism Organization, 1997).
