The Impact of Coup on the Civilians
In politics, a coup d’etat (or just coup) is a swift and decisive action, typically culminating in an unlawful or forcible change of government. Although the effects of coups on governments have received much research, the public has received less attention. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a coup might influence the daily lives of common people.
1. Political Instability:
The immediate aftermath of a coup often brings about a period of political instability. This can lead to uncertainty and fear among civilians, as they are unsure of what the future holds for their country.
2. Economic Impact:
Coups can have a significant impact on a country’s economy. The political instability can lead to a decrease in foreign investment, which can result in job losses and economic downturn. This can have a direct impact on civilians, as they may lose their jobs or face increased living costs.
3. Human Rights Violations:
In many cases, coups are accompanied by widespread human rights violations. These can include arbitrary arrests, torture, and even extrajudicial killings. Civilians are often the victims of these violations.
4. Social Disruption:
A coup can lead to social disruption, as normal life is interrupted. Schools may be closed, public services may be disrupted, and there may be restrictions on freedom of movement. This can have a profound impact on the daily lives of civilians.
5. Psychological Impact:
Fear and uncertainty after a coup may have a profound effect on the psyches of ordinary people. This may cause emotional distress, including worry and anxiety, and even mental illness in extreme circumstances.
Coups have far-reaching and severe consequences for the general populace. Political unrest, economic downturn, human rights violations, social upheaval, and emotional misery are all possible outcomes. As a result, the international community must take measures to forestall coups and provide aid to people in their wake.
