CHAPTER ONE

1.0             INTRODUCTION

Slaughter slab is a structure constructed and reinforced for the purpose of hygienic slaughtering of food animals; it could be rectangular or square in shape of considerable width and length. Today improper disposal of solid waste, sewage and air pollution are fast taking over from nuclear warfare as the town’s biggest problem with its attendance effects on the environment and public health. It is important that measures have to be taken to control improper disposal of solid waste to make the future outlook of industrial environment a conducive place for habitation.

According to world health organization (W.H.O) solid waste can be defined as useless unwanted or discarded material that arise from man’s activities and not free flowing.

The activities of man gives rise to various kinds of solid waste generated but he pays little or no attention to how such waste should be disposed this pose problem on man and his environment. The hazard arising from improper disposal of industrial solid waste can be felt in three broad ways namely.

  • Land pollution
  • Water pollution
  • Air pollution

Therefore, proper disposal of industrial solid waste should be important in the management of such industry as it enable it to meet the purpose for which it was established. Proper waste management involves collecting, storage, transportation, and sanitary disposal of solid waste. Many impediments to proper waste disposal have been identified which had been indicted to be responsible for many health challenges in man and degradation of the environment  such as poor facilities for disposal of waste, lack of political will,  adoption of improper method of waste disposal, assigning of incompetent personnel, misappropriation of funds, mal-administration etc.

Effective management of solid waste without causing harm to human health and enhancement of aesthetic value of the industrial environment has been problematic over the year.

Solid waste management is an important part of environmental hygiene and needs to be addressed with total environmental planning and implementation of workable method for the management and disposal of solid waste. In view of these, it is important to look into waste management of slaughter slab because it is an industrial process that generate waste on daily basis, hence the importance of the research.

1.1   HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Ilaje is a Local Government Area in Ondo State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Igbokoda. The Ilajes are a distinct migratory coastal linguistic group of Yoruba peoples spread along the coastal belts of Ondo, Ogun, Lagos Akwa Ibom and Delta state. The major kingdom are Ugbo, Mahin, Aheri, Etikan, and currently additionally two kingdoms ware carved out from Ugbo Kingdom.

The local government has over 200 primary schools, about 56 health centers and a technical college in Ayetoro. The major occupation of the habitant is fishing mat weaving lumbering and trading. It has a population of over 500,000 according to 2006 population census.

1.2   STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Statements of problem that can emanate from IPARAPO slaughter slab are:-

Workers in the slaughter slab may not have the knowledge of recycling solid waste generated and that the waste generated may lead to environmental pollution and disease outbreak.

Failure to provide personal protective device (PPD) by the owner of the slab also failure to use protective device by employees which might expose them to disease or injury such as occupational dermatitis.

In addition there could be exposure to odour nuisance.

1.3  STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

  • To find out if improper disposal of solid waste is in existence in the slab.
  • To find out the method used in the disposal of solid waste generated from the slab.

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significances of the study are:-

  • To study how improper disposal of industrial solid waste could be minimized, prevented, and to reduce the hazard associated with it.
  • To access the industrial solid waste control method could be embraced and improved upon in order to reduce the risk at work.
  • To identify proper disposal method of solid waste within the study area.

1.5.  JUSTIFICATIONOF THE STUDY

Improper waste disposal is dangerous to health; it is therefore important to identify the waste generated from slabs and proffer affordable means of disposal with minimal risk to health of man and the environment, hence the importance of my research work

1.6     BROAD OBJECTIVE

To access and evaluate industrial activities, its effects on the health of workers and the environment and the control.

1.7    SPECIFIC OBJECTVES

To identify the problem associated with improper disposal of industrial solid waste and control within the industry (slaughter slab)

To find out whether the waste generated from the slaughter slab could lead to environmental pollution.

To ascertain how the industry generate waste and dispose the waste generated.

To encourage the use of personal protective devices (P.P.D)

1.8.      RESEARCH QUESTION AND HYPOTHESIS

RESEARCH QUESTION 1

Are there any hazards or disease associated with improper disposal of solid waste?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS 1

There is no hazard or disease associated with improper disposal of solid wastes.

RESEARCH QUESTION 2

Does improper disposal of solid waste cause hazard in the case study area?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS 2

Improper disposal of solid waste does not cause hazard in the case of study area.

RESEARCH QUESTION 3

Does indiscriminate dumping of solid waste affect the health of man and ecosystem?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS 3

Indiscriminate dumping of solid waste does not affect the health of man ecosystem.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS 4

There is solution to the effect of improper disposal of waste?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS 4

There is no solution to the effect of improper disposal of waste

1.9.    OPERATIONAL DEFINATION OF TERMS

It is very necessary to observe and examine into details some of the definition of word used in this write up.

INDUSTRY: – This can be defined as branch of trade or commerce.

SOLID WASTE: – This can be defined as useless, unwanted or discarded material that arise from man’s activities and are not free flowing.

HEALTH: – This can be defined according to (W.H.O) World health organization, as a complete state of physical, mental, and social wellbeing of an individual not merely in the absence of disease or infirmity.

ENVIRONMENT: – Is defined as the immediate surrounding and with a prospect, assets, problems and liabilities.

SANITATION:- These  are the provision and maintenance of all those physical factors needed in an industry which it not provided and maintained may exact deleterious effect on the health of the workers and nearby community example sanitary conveniences, waste disposal site.

CONTROL: – These are the ongoing operation after the occurrence of disease aiming at reducing the incidence and the duration of the disease.

CONTAMINATION: – This is a presence of pathogenic organism in object or substance capable of causing ill health.

POLLUTION: – This is alteration of the natural environment with substance at a level capable of causing annoyance or discomfort.
