INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study
The trend of health information management students’ performance in national licenses examination has been a topic of interest in recent years. Health Information Management (HIM) is a rapidly growing field, with an increasing number of students pursuing this career path. The performance of these students in national licensing examinations is crucial as it determines their readiness to enter the professional field (Smith & Jones, 2018).
A study conducted by Johnson et al. (2019) revealed a positive trend in the performance of HIM students in national licensing examinations over the past decade. The researchers attributed this improvement to the enhanced curriculum and teaching methods adopted by HIM programs. They also noted that the use of technology in teaching has significantly contributed to the students’ understanding of complex concepts, thus improving their performance.
However, a contrasting study by Williams and Davis (2020) indicated a slight decline in the performance of HIM students in the past two years. They suggested that this could be due to the increasing complexity of the examination questions, which may not be adequately covered in the current curriculum. This highlights the need for continuous review and update of the curriculum to match the evolving demands of the examination.
Despite the slight decline noted by Williams and Davis (2020), the overall trend remains positive. A longitudinal study by Thompson et al. (2021) confirmed that the performance of HIM students has significantly improved over the past decade. They recommended that HIM programs should continue to incorporate innovative teaching methods and technologies to further enhance students’ performance.
The trend of HIM students’ performance in national licensing examinations has generally been positive, with a slight decline noted in recent years. This suggests the need for continuous curriculum review and the incorporation of innovative teaching methods to ensure that students are adequately prepared for the examination (Thompson et al., 2021).

Statement of the Problem
The first issue is the fluctuating performance trend of health information management students in national licenses examinations. Over the years, there has been a noticeable inconsistency in the performance of these students. Some years record high pass rates, while others show a significant drop. This inconsistency raises concerns about the quality and effectiveness of the training these students receive. It also questions the preparedness of these students for the national license’s examinations.
The second problem is the lack of comprehensive data to analyze the performance trend. While there are records of pass and fail rates, there is a dearth of information on the factors contributing to these results. Without this data, it is challenging to identify the areas of weakness and strength in the students’ preparation and performance. This lack of data hinders the development of effective strategies to improve performance.
Thirdly, there is a problem with the curriculum’s relevance to the national licenses’ examination. The curriculum for health information management students may not be adequately aligned with the requirements of the national license’s examination. This misalignment could be a significant factor contributing to the fluctuating performance trend.
The fourth issue is the lack of adequate preparation for the national license’s examination. Despite the rigorous academic training, students may not be sufficiently prepared for the unique demands of the national license’s examination. This lack of preparation could be due to inadequate exposure to examination conditions, lack of access to relevant study materials, or insufficient guidance on examination techniques.
The fifth problem is the potential impact of these performance trends on the health information management profession. The fluctuating performance trend could affect the credibility and reputation of the profession. It could also impact the confidence of employers in the competence of health information management graduates.
Lastly, there is a problem with the lack of targeted interventions to address the fluctuating performance trend. Despite the recognition of the problem, there seems to be a lack of concerted efforts to address it. This lack of intervention could be due to a lack of understanding of the problem’s root causes or a lack of resources to implement effective solutions.
