ABSTRACT

This research work dealt with the implications of 2 Tim. 1:3-7 for parenting in the 21st Century church, using Foursquare Gospel Church, Eyita Zone, Ikorodu as a case study examines parenting as a critical issue, that many have failed at the with different reasons  and the effects of it on children. The burden for the work is as a result of children of the result of children of these era having less or no morals, virtues, lacking parental love, care and deterioration of values. The researcher quickly attempt to unravel this phenomenon that is becoming so rampant, in spite of the present day religious boom in the country. This research work employed library/field based approach; which includes the study of related materials such as books, journals, internet sources, questionnaires and oral interviews. The researcher recommends parenting should be applied rightly right from the knowledge of how God wants it to be, the church needs to develop a new orientation and approach to effecting parenting by giving it utmost importance.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter is to address the background to this study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, delimitation of the study, research procedure and definition of terms.

1.1       Background of the Study

Parenting has always been an everyday topic when it comes to children behavioral formation. Parenting back dated from the 60’s  is different from what it is today, which is so demanding and challenging and as modernization/civilization increases so the challenging factors e.g peer pressure, human rights revolution, the communication explosion, the internet, rising in divorce rates, single parents raising kids e.t.c

According to Dr. James  Dobson these frustration have produced what he calls a crisis of confidence in today’s parents. This fact was verified in his study of more than 35,000 parents, when Dr. Dobson asked about the greatest frustrations in raising children the majority focused not on their sons and daughter but on their own failures as parents. As the bible saying goes that “Train up children in the right way and when old, they will not stray”. There is need for children to be trained adequately by their parents for proper behaviors, so as when they grow to live home and subsequently by their foolishness go into the wilderness of unrighteous living, when they are old they know the wisdom of righteous living that they learned from their parents.

If parents fulfill their responsibility to implant a moral guide by which their children can find their way back to the morals received at their early stage. The challenge is for parents and church leaders to realize the need to ensure a parenting by an ability to pass moral heritage, personal interactions and simplicity of the gospel with cognisence to their ages and levels without diluting the intent, to ensure the continuity and growth of the church and positive society in face of many of many challenges facing development of a child of today.

However, the aim of this paper is to look at the implications of II Timothy 1:3-7 for parenting in the 21st century church.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

Parenting as an important assignment on the face of the earth have been ignored and taken for levity by many mothers, fathers and the church resulting to children less mannered, absent mind to God, nuisance to the society and no content to stand the virus been spread in the world.

The church not offering an enduring teaching on how parenting is to be carried out because many parents don’t understand the frustrating aspect of child-rearing, the techniques that succeed magnificently with one child can fail bewilderingly with another and others overwhelmed by the responsibility of it all.

1.3       Purpose of the study

Many factors have radically changed how children view life, so giving an urgent need for parents and the church to learn how to cope with the tremendous challenges and pressures of contemporary life on kids who live in today’s complex, rapidly changing world. Hence, this study is designed to achieve the following objectives:

• To reveal the challenges of parenting\
• To show different approaches to parenting
• To point out how essential parenting is to the growth of the church.

1.4       Significance of the Study

This research will benefit all Christians (as part of a local church or family unit) by serving as reminder of God’s assignment to train up a child in the way he should go and to teach them diligently and relevantly. The result from the study shall be applicable to any given church regardless of any location and denomination.

It will strengthen the family system as it will draw attention of the family to the need to reach the children early enough which will rub on; on non-Christian family with the gospel via positive influence of the gospel in the lives of their children as a result of coming into contact with children from Godly homes.

This research will also help to refocus the attention of parents to their children with keen closeness, act as an eye opener to correct wrong approaches taken in raising some of these kids.

1.5       Delimitation of the Study

The study is limited to the use of Foursquare Gospel Church Eyita, Ikorodu Lagos and its mainly on parenting, examining its implication from II Tim. 1:3-7 in the 21st Century church. The result from the sample shall be applicable to any given church regardless of any location and denomination.

1.6       Research Procedure

Materials of relevant authors  and authorities on this subject matter were reviewed, especially  those of Christian literatures, journals and lecture materials, some literature books such as textbooks, commentaries, concordances, Dictionaries, Handouts, Bibles from LIFE Theological Seminary Library and some from personal Library.

The researcher also consulted the internet for information on this subject matter; and of course various document from Foursquare Gospel Church Eyita, Ikorodu Lagos. Lastly, Questionnaires will also be administered to members of the church used as case study, pastors and other leaders to gather relevant information for a reliable compilation.

1.7       Limitation of the Study

The researcher encountered some difficulties in relation to the distribution and collection of questionnaires from the respondents. However, a valid report is presented based on the available date. And also sorting of materials was also challenging.

1.8         Definition of Term

          Implication: The fact or state of being involved in or connected to something.
