THE EFFECT OF MANDATORY NIN REGISTRATION ON STUDENTS EDUCATION (A CASE STUDY OF UTME)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is really important. Education is a crucial aspect of one’s existence. It is the secret to potential prosperity, and we have a lot of possibilities in our lives. People benefit from Education in a variety of ways. It illuminates a person’s mind and thought, for example. It aids students in making job choices or seeking higher education by university graduation. According to Al-Shuaibi (2014), education in a specific area enables individuals to perceive, feel, and respond in ways that lead to their performance and increase not just their personal but also their community’s satisfaction. Education often helps to form a person’s attitude, emotions, and social abilities. It also helps people brace for life’s challenges. People gain a special place in their own culture and wherever they reside as a result of that.

Al-Shuaibi (2014) believes everyone has the right to an education from cradle to grave. There are many advantages of getting a successful education, including a good job, a good social standing, and trust. First and foremost, education prepares us for a successful future. We have many opportunities to operate at every location we choose (Exley, 2016). It improves the odds of finding more and more convenient jobs. The more informed we are, the higher our prospects of life are. Furthermore, education sharpens our brains, strengthens our convictions, and improves our character and attitudes against others. It provides us with knowledge in a number of fields in general and our own discipline in particular, focusing on what we need to learn in our professional careers.

Exley (2016) opines that as a result, we cannot adequately live or provide a respectable career without education. Furthermore, education provides one with a high social standing. Because we are educated, we are regarded as a valuable source of knowledge in our society. Education allows one to instill important principles, proper etiquette, and ethical values in our children. As a consequence, people interact with us in a meaningful and distinctive manner that is both constructive and resourceful. As a consequence, it is a pleasure for us to represent and contribute to the development of our society. Education, in truth, is beneficial to assisting our citizens and establishing a successful community. Furthermore, it is well established that education is often associated with the development of trust. Confidence is a wonderful gift to us because it contributes to many benefits and achievements in life (Bano, 2015). Bano (2015) opines that it will, for example, assist us in managing specific activities, confronting life’s difficulties, and maintaining optimistic attitudes. Furthermore, faith is usually focused on proper education, which prepares us for success. As a consequence, we become more aware of how effectively we do a mission or sequence of acts while we have self-confidence. Overall, education is the method of gaining skills and information in order to have a better future. As previously said, getting a successful education has many advantages, including a good job, a good social standing, and self-confidence. Education helps one to see difficulties as opportunities to conquer anxiety and to remain accessible to new experiences. It is the driving force behind good individuals and developing countries’ achievements. As a result, education is regarded as a true success factor of all potential success.

The National Identification Number was put in place so as to identify citizens of Nigeria. According to an article published on peoples gazette (2021), the mandatory NIN registration is causing major challenges in the educational sector as it is causing students who want to enroll for the UTME examinations to be delayed and pay extra charges.

1.2  STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

With the introduction of the enrollment of the National Identity Number (NIN) of the citizens of Nigeria, various challenges have emerged. Although the NIN registration is a very impressive step by the government, it has proven to be an impediment in other sectors such as the educational sector as it has caused challenges for students who wish to enroll themselves in the UTME program. It has now become mandatory that in order to register for the UTME examinations, students looking to write the examination must have already registered and retrieved their NIN as without it, there will be no registration. School administrations and parents are against this new policy.

This study seeks to examine the effects of the mandatory NIN registration on students’ education.

1.      To examine the effects of the NIN registration on students’ education.

2.      To determine if the mandatory NIN registration has led to the delay of students enrollment for the UTME examinations.

3.      To provide recommendations that should be put in place for NIN registration of students.

1.4  RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.      What are the effects of the NIN registration on students’ education?

2.      Has the mandatory NIN registration has led to the delay of students enrollment for the UTME examinations?

3.      What are the recommendations that should be put in place for NIN registration of students?

1.5  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be helpful to the government and the governing body overseeing the mandatory registration of NIN as it would create awareness on the various challenges of making it mandatory especially for students who want to write UTME examinations. This study will also be helpful to other researchers who wish to delve deeper and expatiate more on the various challenges of the NIN registration in another sector in the country.

1.6  SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study will take a look at the on the effects of the NIN registration on students’ education, the various effects and challenges that have sprung up as a result of such a policy. Recommendations that should be put in place for students and the NIN registration will be discussed in this study.

1.7  LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The only limitation faced by the researcher while undertaking this study was lack of funds.
