The Use of Palliative in Alleviating the Suffering of the Masses in Nigeria
Relief from the distressing symptoms and prolonged hospital stays that accompany terminal disease is the primary goal of palliative care. Palliative care has gained prominence in Nigeria, a country with a large population living in poverty and with severe health difficulties. In this paper, we’ll look at how palliative care might assist ease the suffering of the country’s populace as a whole in Nigeria.
The Nigerian health care system is frequently underfunded and overworked. This is especially true for the poor, as they are often unable to afford even the most fundamental medical care. Because of its emphasis on patient and family well-being, palliative care may be an important tool in meeting these issues.
In Nigeria, palliative care is mostly delivered via community-based initiatives. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) regularly spearhead efforts like this, which help patients with terminal illnesses and their loved ones financially. Depending on the patient’s needs, this treatment may also involve psychosocial and spiritual assistance.
However, palliative care faces several obstacles before it can be widely used in Nigeria. These include insufficient money, a shortage of educated medical personnel, and a general lack of knowledge about the benefits of palliative care. Despite these setbacks, a number of groups are working to increase access to palliative care in Nigeria.
There is a great opportunity for palliative care to reduce widespread suffering in Nigeria. However, more education, training, and resources are needed to make palliative care live up to its full potential. If these conditions are met, palliative care can make significant contributions to the health and well-being of the Nigerian people.
