CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       INTRODUCTION

Visitor is someone staying as a guest. Direction is a sign of information given. Guide is a book which gives you the most important information about a particular subject. A Visitors’ direction guide is a book or a person that shows someone staying as a guest in a place around offering information. The people that live within FPNO especially students finding their way to the school environment will use web based visitor’s direction guide prototype system. It is being accessed or use via internet. If a visitor needs help, a guide or direction to his or her location, he or she will visit the website. Web based visitor’s direction guide is used on a daily bases by visitors within FPNO.

1.2 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede Owerri startedin 1978 as the College of Technology, Owerri. It was established by the Imo state Government through Edict No.16 of April 1978. It took off at its temporary site at the premises of Government Technical College (GTC), Owerri along Egbu Road in the same year. In 1981, the institution moved to its present and permanent located in Nekede, Owerri. By Imo State Government Edict No.6 of 1987, the name of the institution was changed to, The Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri”. Six years after, and precisely on 7th April, 1993, the Federal Government Institution. Consequently, it was again renamed “The Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri”. The Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri is regulated by the Federal Polytechnics Act (CAP 139) of 1979. The functions of the Polytechnic as provided for in Section 2(1) of the Act are as follows:

1. To provide full-time or part-time courses on instruction and training.
   i. In technology, applied science, commerce and management
   ii. In such other fields of applied learning relevant to the needs of the development of Nigeria in the areas of industrial and agricultural production of distribution and for research in the development and adaption of technique as the council may from time to determine.
2. To arrange conferences, seminars and study groups relative to the fields of learning specified in paragraph (a) of this subsection (1)
3. To perform such functions as in the opinion of the council may serve to promote the objectives of the polytechnic.
   Conscious of the objectives for which the polytechnic was established, it adopted the Motto” Knowledge and skill for service” right from its inception in 1978. It has vigorously pursued its objectives. However in federal polytechnic Nekede visitors direction guild is done in a manual way were by a visitor will ask the gate men in the school please how do I locate a particular office or destination within the school environment, also the gate men will likely response to the visitor go through this direction or through this direction however this method is time consuming and slow in response , moreover when implement this system it will alleviate the manual process of visitors direction within the school.

• STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem encountered by the environment while trying to implement the activities of the topic.

1. Poor responds visitors get from questions they asked in the process of finding their location.
2. Manual process
3. Time consuming.

1.4       AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The aim of the project work is to develop a computerized Visitor’s direction guide Intranet system for Federal Polytechnic Nekede web based software that will have the following objectives:

• To make our lives more convenient by providing an efficient device to give visitors direction to various destination within the school environment.
• To reduce time and energy wasted while asking for various destinations within the school.
• To make visitors get to their destination on time and (easy accessibility).

1.5       SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study shows how u can locate the exact destination u are going to, this study covers the concept of Intranet Guide for visitors GIS with much emphasis on Standard geographical implementation to the problem of geo info. The study should limit its scope on acquisition of spatial security and effective delivery of geographic information as solely carried out on various countries today.

1.6            SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1. This project will be beneficial to Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri
2. it will be beneficial to student of Federal Polytechnic Owerri
3. it will be beneficial to those that visit the school premises on daily basis.

1.7            LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Some of the difficulties encountered while trying to carry out this project research includes:

1. Resource Constraint: it was very tedious to gather resources.
2. Financial Constraint: This is another constraint that delays the project work financially.
3. Difficulty associated with coding and programming.

1.8       DEFINITION OF TECHNICAL TERMS

These are the technical terms you will see in the concept of writing this project.

1. Information System: It is a collection of procedures, people, Instructions and equipment to produce information in a useful form.

• Technology: is the study of techniques or process of mobilizing Resource such as information for accomplishing objectives that benefits man and his environment.

2. Information: Information can be defined as the process of gathering, transmitting, receiving, storing and retrieving data or several items put together to convey a desired message.
3. Computer Network: Computer Network is a system that connects two or more computers together using a communication link so that they can share resources.
4. Information Transfer: Any kind of computer information can be sent via the Internet from one Internet user to another. Table of counts on spreadsheets, design by a graphic artists, music sound student registration information, can all be exchanged in this way.
5. Municipality: A city or town with its own local government or the local government itself.
6. Spatial: Relating to the position, area and size of things
