CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- INTRODUCTION
Availability of information is no longer an issue on the Internet. The dynamic nature of the evolving Internet and the growth of information content requiring extraction is becoming a more demanding task for users alone as each day progresses. Users are faced with the daunting task of identifying the relevant information from an ever-growing sea of inadequate or inappropriate data made available on the Internet today. The escalating rate of new information sources is illustrated by the number of hosts on the web. Whilst search engines provide some information to web users, their use is limited, due to the lack of providing structural information and categorization, filtering or interpretation of the documents. We are witnessing a paradigm shift in human-computer interaction from direct manipulation of computer systems to indirect management. These factors call for a stable browser tools in the form of web agents to work alongside the user to provide a higher-level understanding of a user-specific web space.
- BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Everyone uses the internet as an information resource. However, each time a person browses the World Wide Web (WWW), there is no-one and nothing to remember who they are and what their habits are. It is clear that the process of information discovery could be greatly assisted if there was a way of making it personalized. However, after a user currently views a web page or queries a search engine, their interest in that topic will rarely finish at that point, and will persist for a given period of time. The most convincing reason to adopt a set of browsing tools is due to this characteristic of a user’s persistence of interest. Novice web users would feel more comfortable in an environment where subtle suggestions for user-specific pages of interest and recommendations of superior browsing techniques were at hand. Instead, they are bewildered by an ever increasing wealth of information. Experienced web users can be found to visit a small repeat collection of web sites frequently, but each time they browse these sites, their identity is unrecognized and cannot benefit from any form of a user-specific recommendations. This is portrayed with around a one fifth of web users having difficulty in finding pages they’ve already visited Utilising web mining techniques to combat the explosive growth of internet information this project aims to automatically construct user-specific browsing models, generate intelligent inferences of these observed browsing activities and provide users with a set of tools that help them to browse the websites that they commonly visit in a more effective fashion. In order to achieve this, the inherent challenges in web mining must be addressed.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
It is a common practice for every establishment organization to try as much as possible in meeting the demands and needs of the people for which it was established. Every individual who partakes in the online activity complained about inadequate time, difficulty in accessing web pages. This could lead to apathy on the side of the individual for not been fully trained. Another problem is the area of speed, if the browser is capable rendering service accurately.
1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This project aimed at designing a dynamic web browser application capable of rendering user request in real-time without delay which has the following objectives;
- Research ideas and concepts of a system that could analyze user observed browsing activities automatically to underpin a set of tools that can help users to browse the websites they commonly visit in a more effective fashion.
- Decide on the design of a system of smart web browsing tools and the underlying series of techniques that will be used to facilitate them.
- Test and evaluate the system by the effectiveness of the web mining techniques and the usability of the implemented system of tools.
- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
However the study will deal with the problem outlined in I.T and result in achievement of the objectives listed above. It is also important to note that this project work will not only help to enlighten individual, private and public corporations but will also serve as a key for information analysis in e-commerce website development. Hence, the following points can be considered as the significance of study.
- The study will aid students who at varying times can engage in similar research on this topic.
- It will be useful for those who aspire to convert their venture into e-commerce venture by outlining the steps to design and implement e-commerce website.
- SCOPE OF THE STUDY

- LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
As is expected, some constraints were experienced during the course of this study that militated against finding sufficient materials and required data.
- The reaction of some IT firms to release some material that deemed sensitive.
- Lack of appropriate research materials on the topic: A simple web browser Assisted Testing System as regards the Microsoft internet explorer context.
- Time constraint in carrying out the study.
- Financial constraint.
