CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.0 INTRODUCTION
As the information era continues to advance and diverse information technology architectures are designed and implemented, there has arisen the need to design business and enterprise solutions that would take full advantage of these advancing technologies. At the center of this “information revolution” is the Internet, a global network of networks that has steadily become an integral part in the way people communicate, do business and relate to one another. In view of this, designing modern day information technology solutions to make maximum use of the Internet’s vast potential has been the focus of developers, businesses and scientists alike.
This project therefore, is a demonstration of the numerous benefits that can be achieved from implementing Internet solutions to solve daily problems. Registration and authentication processes that are employed in almost every area of human activity will be modeled to work on an online environment. In particular, Assignment Submission website will be designed and implemented to run on the Internet. An open source platform will be employed for the development with technologies ranging from JavaScript to php, MySQL and beyond.
1.1 PROJECT MOTIVATION
When a lecturer gives assignment to students, he expects them to submit either a printed or written hardcopy of the assignment solution which can bring about some flaws during the submission process. Some of these flaws include:
- Submitting a particular assignment more than once i.e. a Student could submit two copies of the same assignment with different solutions to confuse the lecturer in choosing which one to validate.
- Loss or damage to the hardcopy, written or printed submitted by the Student.
- Students could persuade the lecturer to allow them to submit the assignment after the deadline for submission has expired.
The Assignment Submission Website will go a long way in solving these crucial setbacks;
- The website will not allow any Student to submit an assignment more than once, so there can be no duplicate copies of any assignment by any Student.
- The copy of each assignment submitted by each Student can be downloaded by the lecturer onto his personal computer there will also be a backup on the internet for future reference.
- No Student, no matter what can submit an assignment after the deadline date for submission has expired. The website will bounce back such attempt.
1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The aim of this project is to design an e-assignment submission is to save time and reduce level of plagiarism defect. Hence in order to achieve a functional e-assignment submission online, the aim is set to achieve the following objectives:
- To promote standardization of the assessment process across the institution.
- To provide transparency of assignment criteria descriptors in use for all assignments.
- To improve the quality and speed of feedback to students.
- The checking and reporting of academic integrity of submitted assignments.
- Provide an electronic assignment handling solution for all schools and programs of study.
- Integrate plagiarism detection into student assignment submission.
1.3 TOOLS AND METHODOLOGY
- a) The project would be achieved by using some macromedia packages such as Dreamweaver to aid the coding and also in beautifying by the user interface and Fireworks to aid in designing the user interface of the site. MySQL is also used to handle the various database processes involved
- b) Relevant materials required can be obtained by surfing the internet for relevant information and necessary techniques to achieve objectives and consulting important books to acquire more skills in achieving objectives.
1.4 LIMITATIONS
- This project work does not apply for all courses, it’s just for one particular course.
- The speed and availability of Internet services is also a concern as passport will have to be uploaded (This take a considerable amount of bandwidth).
- Not all potential Students know how to use the Internet. Although the registration process is simple, some students would still find it easier to fill a paper form than to go through an online registration process.
1.5 ORGANIZATION OF THE PROJECT
Principally this project will consist of three phases:
- Definition phase (Where questions like, what is wrong with the existing system? What is needed? What should be done? Are asked).
- Development phase (Where questions like, How will the design be achieved? What difference will it make with the existing one? Are asked).
- Support phase (Where questions like, How does the system work? How long will it work? What is needed to maintain it? Are asked).
The Project Consists of Five Chapters.
Chapter one: deals with the introduction, the essence of the development and the procedures to be followed to achieve it.
Chapter two: consists of the literature review, here the manure (existing) system is analyzed to see its problems and propound solutions to them. The proposed system is also reviewed so as to explain its nature and general concept.
Chapter three: involves the design of the application and the various criteria used for the design. These criteria are followed to achieve what is to be done. In summary, it is here that it is tested and the feasibility of the design is detected.
Chapter four: is the implementation and maintenance phase. Here the design is implemented after comparison with the existing system. The development is achieved here and the construction and final touches are put forward in this chapter.
Chapter five: involves the summary, recommendation and conclusion. Here the whole process is summarized, a conclusion about the system is done and recommendations as to how to improve and maintain the system are put forward. References as how and where information was gotten about the design are also put forward here.
