CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 INTRODUCTION
An online food ordering system can be defined as software that allows restaurant businesses to accept and manage orders placed over the internet. An online food ordering system is software that allows restaurant businesses to accept and manage orders placed via a website or mobile app. Online ordering systems generally consists of 2 main components. First is a website or mobile app for hungry customers to view the restaurant’s dishes and place an online order. Second is an admin management interface for the restaurants to receive and manage the customer’s orders (Samuel, 2018).
According to Peterson (2014), the online food ordering system is one of the latest servicers most fast food restaurants in the western world are adopting. With this method, food is ordered online and delivered to the customer. This is made possible through the use of electronic payment system. Customers pay with their credit cards, although credit card customers can be served even before they make payment either through cash or cheque. So, the system designed in this project will enable customers go online and place order for their food. Due to the great increase in the awareness of internet and the technologies associated with it, several opportunities are coming up on the web.
So many businesses and companies now venture into their business with ease because of the internet. One of such business that the internet introduced is an online food ordering system. In today’s age of fast food and take out, many restaurants have chosen to focus on quick preparation and speedy delivery of orders rather than offering a rich dining experience. Until recently, most of this delivery orders were placed over the phone, but there are many disadvantages to this system. It is possible for anybody to order any goods via the internet and have the goods delivered at his/her doorsteps.
With the improvement of technology, online food ordering systems are becoming a popular topic. That’s because they are serving the ever increasing demand for convince. The main purpose of an online ordering system is to provide customers for a way to place an order at a restaurant over the internet. The main reason is that it benefits both the customer and the business. With a website or mobile app, customers can easily browse all the dishes the restaurant has available, customize dishes to their requirements and place an order. It can also save their favourite orders allowing them to easily re-order that in the future. From the restaurants perspective, they no longer spend time taking the customers order, stop worrying about communication errors and streamline their order management workflow. In a nutshell, an online ordering system works by providing a website or mobile app where customers can view a restaurants menu and place an order. These orders are then received by the restaurant using an app (Leveler et al., 2017)
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
According to Russev (2013), the first online food order was a pizza from Pizza Hut in 1994. The online food ordering market has increased in the U.S with 40 percent of U.S adults having ordered their food online once. The online food ordering market includes foods prepared by restaurants, prepared by independent people, and groceries being ordered online and then picked up or delivered. The first online food ordering service, World Wide Waiter (now known as Waiter.com), was founded in 1995. The site originally serviced only northern California, later expanding to several additional cities in the United States.
By the late 2000s, major pizza chains had created their own mobile applications and started doing 20–30 percent of their business online. With increased smartphone penetration, and the growth of both Uber and the sharing economy, food delivery startups started to receive more attention. In 2010, Snapfinger, who is a multi-restaurant ordering website, had a growth in their mobile food orders by 17 percent in one year. In 2015, China’s online food ordering and delivery market grew from 0.15 billion yuan to 44.25 billion yuan. As of September 2016, online delivery accounted for about 3 percent of the 61 billion U.S. restaurant transactions. In a 2019 market study of restaurant delivery services, the global market for online-ordered prepared food delivery was estimated at $94 billion and is estimated to grow at just over 9 percent a year, reaching $134.5 billion in 2023.
The term ‘restaurant’ first appeared in the 18th century in France. It referred to a reinvigorating meat broth which people ate to refortify the body. It was not until the French Revolution and subsequent industrialization that culinary establishments such as we know them today began to appear and develop. However, the modern restaurant is not an entirely new creation. The activity of eating outside the home has existed for thousands of years (Fanel and Miller, 2017).
During Classical Antiquity, thermopolia served food and drink to customers of all social classes. Archaeological digs uncovered more than 150 such places in the city of Pompeii, highlighting the importance of this type of establishment. The rather basic thermopolium served food in bowls carved into an L-shaped counter. The Middle Ages and Renaissance period saw the emergence of the tavern and inn in Europe, precursors to the modern restaurant. Often located on the side of a road, they offered food and shelter to travellers. The meal cooked was at the discretion of the chef and travellers had to settle for the single dish of the day. Meanwhile, under the Song dynasty (960-1279) in China, the Empire’s capital city was filled with establishments serving their customers a range of à la carte dishes (Fanel and Miller, 2017).
In Switzerland, the first restaurants appeared only in 1880. In the 20th century, lifestyles changed and eating in restaurants at lunchtime became commonplace for many workers. Restaurants started to specialize and target their clientele. Eating in a restaurant in the evening began to be associated with a leisure activity combining discovery, pleasure and conviviality, an outing with family or friends away from the household dining room (Stanger, 2019).
Mama’s Kitchen Republic is an eatery that serves you home made food at an affordable rate in a friendly, neat and comfortable environment. It started in the year, 2007. Mama’s kitchen eatery is a restaurant on Otefe, Oghara-Delta State. It is a conducive eatery at Otefe Oghara Delta state, they have variety of delicacies, snacks, ice cream, popcorn, sharwama, chicken and chips and various soft drinks at affordable price with great customer service.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The manual method of going to their local food sales outlets to purchase food is becoming obsolete and more tasking. Often times, when a customer visit’s the Mama’s Kitchen Republic, they are left to stand on long waiting queue before being attended to. In addition, customers gets dissatisfied because after waiting the long queue, the customer will then find out that the meal he wants is no longer available. However, with a digital online presence of the restaurant, the administrator will continually update the menu of meals available so that hungry users can browse through and place their order.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of this study is to design and implement an online food ordering system for restaurants.
The objectives are as follows;
- To provide an avenue where customers will be able to gather more and reliable information about the meal menu of the restaurant.
- To provide a user friendly environment between the customer and employee thus increasing the efficiency of the food ordering system.
- To present an online purchase form with which valued customers will be using to get in touch with any of their request whenever the need arises.
- It will also help for easy retrieval of orders made by the customers.
- To provide a means for periodically assessing the frequently demand meal type which will aid the organization’s growth
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
In view of the rapid development of computer technology in almost all the fields of operation and its use in relation to information management, it has become important to look into the development of online ordering system for firms to meet up with demands of the customers. Therefore, the food ordering and delivery system will help customers and management advertise available foods in their company 2. Reduce the workload in the present system. The manual method of going to their local food sales outlets to purchase food is becoming obsolete and more tasking. Food can be ordered through the internet and payment made without going to the restaurant or the food vendor. So there is need for a wide range of publicity and enabling direct order, processing and delivering of food through online system. For this system, there will be a system administrator who will have the rights to enter the menu with current prevailing prices.
1.5 SCOPE OF STUDY
In this project, we propose to design and implement an online food ordering system for enhanced operation of the Mama’s Kitchen Republic, Otefe-Oghara as a case study to enable customers order for food and get it delivered accordingly and also to reduce the long queues of customers at the counter ordering for food and to reduce the work load on the employees.
1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
Due to time and financial constraints, the software that is developed covers only the aspect of food ordering and payments.
