CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Petroleum products are among the most valuable natural resource abundantly available and widely used. In a way, gas stations have great effect on human race. This is because we purchase petroleum products at gas stations. Nigerians and people everywhere use petroleum products as fuel in their automobile, generating sets, industrial plants and for cooking purposes, thus making petroleum products an essential commodity that is needed for the daily operations of individual, industrial and national activities. Research has shown that in Nigeria there are 2,201 gas stations in porous border towns and coastal frontiers, with a combined fuel capacity of 144.9 million litres. A Gas Station also known as Petrol Station, Filling Station, Fuelling Station, or Service Station is a facility which sells fuel and lubricants for motor vehicles, allowing motorists or other users of the products to top-up the products. The most common fuel sold at a gas station is petrol and kerosene. According to Keble (1968), Petrol stations should be located not only where they are in fact accessible but where they can be easily located by strangers and that, in details, they should be placed where they will create little or no danger and congestion as possible. According to the central place theory (Christallers, 1966), Service point could be distributed rationally according to the size, spacing or distance and population to be served. This means that, demand for products sold at filling stations would be satisfied by a system of service points at the central places.
The importance of gas stations to the society and individuals (especially motorists) cannot be over-emphasized. With the growing number of gas stations in various places in the society, it is now much easier for consumers to get the products almost anywhere they need it.
Gas station locator system on the other hand is computerized system which tends to allow consumers of the various petroleum products find the product where it is readily available, and at what price at a particular time; so as to eliminate time wastage, minimize cost and distance.
1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Many a times, due to scarcity, major gas stations are out of stock, thereby leaving consumers of petroleum products stranded. In Yenagoa, Bayelsa state where this project is based on, locating nearby gas station with standard product, accurate fuel pumps, and reasonable prices tends to hinder the daily activities of major consumers of petroleum products (especially motorists). With gas station locator, a motorist or other petroleum products consumers can locate the nearest gas station with available petroleum products (or the particular petroleum product they want) by visiting the gas station website.
Consideration of the above stated problems resulted in carryout this project work.
1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of this study is to develop a system which determines the location, availability and price of petroleum products in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
To achieve the above stated aim, the following objectives will be employed:
To develop a real-time system which allows the data to be updated as they are modified.
To design a web-based layout for the system using client-side web development tools such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
To create a back-end connectivity and data management system using server-side languages such as PHP and MySQL.
To create user-friendly system using familiar icons, screenshots, titles and dialogs which enhance users’ experience and interactivity with the system.
To develop the system for testing offline using localhost software such as Xampp.
1.3 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study denotes the technical boundaries where the system can operate. This system will operate within the area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
1.4 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The limitation of the study is actually the area of study (yenagoa, Bayelsa state). Within this area of study which are the major towns in yenagoa, most of the gas stations have substandard fuel pumps, some of the gas stations are uncompleted and some are non-functional, most of them are locally set up thereby reducing its standard, that is there are very few standard gas stations which makes it a little bit difficult to carryout proper research. Also internet access is so poor in most towns which might also hinder users from locating a gas station on the website.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of this study cannot be over-emphasized; as consumer of petroleum products will have no need for wasting their time at gas stations with unavailable products, and may even purchase product at a gas station where the product is cheaper and also locate gas stations faster in a case of emergency.
Gas station locator system will in no doubt improve the lives of petroleum consumers (especially motorists) in the Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; as consumers will choose to go to a gas station and not suddenly be informed that the product they are looking for is unavailable. Moreover, consumers through the system will be able to minimize cost as well by searching for where the product has quality and is available.
1.6 METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY
The web-based gas station locator system will be built using PHP technology for the backend commands which is the power house of the system. HTML and CSS will be used to design the frontend while JavaScript would be the major language used to validate make the system real-time as the system will be getting its data at some intervals. MySQL database management system will be used to store and manage the information for the system.
The process model used in this project is the incremental software development model which allows the system to be built, evaluated and improved upon while development continues.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Gas Station: Also known as Petrol Station, Filling Station, Fuelling Station, or Service Station is a facility which sells fuel and lubricants for motor vehicles, allowing motorists or other users of the products to top-up the products.
CSS: Cascading Style Sheet; a language used for styling a website.
Database servers: Computers that hold the actual databases and run only the DBMS and related software.
Database: A collection of data organized for storage in a computer memory and designed for easy access by authorized users.
MySQL: A Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) that runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases.
PHP: PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (A recursive acronym); a server side scripting language used to link the data in the database to the interface of a website.
Processing: To handle operation according to an established procedure.
SQL: Structured query language is a code used to query and manipulate entities and records in a database.
Web: A computer-based network of information resources that combines text and multimedia. The information on the WWW can be accessed and search through the internet; a global computer network.
