CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In 1990 International Teletrac Systems (later PacTel Teletrac), founded in Los Angeles CA, introduced the world’s first dynamic real-time stolen vehicle recovery services. As an adjacency to this they began developing location based services that could transmit information about location-based goods and services to custom-programmed alphanumeric Motorola pagers. In 1996 Todd Glassey designed the first Digital Timestamp Server for Email and other content validation and created the first instances of “GeoSpatial Keying” a complex cryptographic process for using time and location data to access or ‘unlock’ certain key services. As a result of these efforts in 1999 the first Digital Location Based Service Patent was filled in the US and ultimately issued after nine (9) office actions in March 2002. The patent has controls which when applied to today’s networking models provide key value in all systems.
1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This is an outline of the objectives of the design of this system:
- User control facility to handle security and ensure that access is only granted to specific individuals.
- Two user clients; one for staff to update their locations and the other for students to access the location of staffers.
- An administrative section that enables users with admin privileges access higher functions of the system.
- Function to enable sending of SMS(Short Message Service) from the system via the OZEKI server API
1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM
The Proposed system is a web based system that receives live location input from active members of staff and displays their location in real time for access by students and other members of staff. The system will store all data it receives in a SQL database also the system will possess a facility whereby the administrative user can send an SMS to a staff member in case an urgent or important information is to be passed along. The system is a web – based application and for optimal performance should be hosted on the Internet.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will help create an immersive educational experience for students also it will aid students and staff locate staff members by providing the whereabouts of each lecturer within the school environment thereby eliminating randomly searching offices and faculty blocks. This system will also assist the university administration pass urgent messages to staff members without the need of using traditional SMS methods (i.e. using the text message facility on a mobile phone).
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This project explains and shows the computerization of the location of staff in a university system. For the purpose of this project, I will be using Benson Idahosa University as a case study.
1.5 LIMITATON OF THE STUDY
The limitations of this study are:
- Time Constraint.
- Financial constraints: Due to the financial constraints of my project work, I had to improvise the method of collecting location data because I couldn’t afford to get GPS (Global Positioning System) devices and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips used in standard asset tracking situations
